Listen to The Podcast
Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico.
That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The
El Dorado Beach Club, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into the ever so romantic Vista Grill with those dramatic views of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course, at La Palapa you can enjoy that same view of the Los Muertos Pier all day long for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with our toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It was so romantic, it’s so, Puerto Vallarta my friends.
This week, I have a really great guest to introduce you to, his name is Conner Watts, and Conner is the owner of Vallarta’s first Craft Beer
Brewery Los Muertos Brewing Company, located on the Southside but first, let’s see what’s happening this week in Puerto Vallarta, the 4th of July 2018.
First of all, Happy 4th of July to all you fellow Americans out there, and let’s forget that Canada Day was just last week on the 1st of July and on the same day, Mexicans went to the polls and elected a new president, Andreas Manuel Lopez Obrador, the former mayor of Mexico City. And Obrador won in a landslide with 53% of the vote. Obrador is considered to be a leftist, and he has expressed a willingness to negotiate with President Trump over NAFTA, which he was a very big critic of at it’s inception. So, this will be interesting to see how things develop over the coming months. It’s certainly something to keep our eyes out for.
What was so interesting about election day in Puerto Vallarta, was that the local authorities suspended the laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol on election day, sometimes for 24 hours, sometimes for 48 hours depending on the municipality, buy in Vallarta, the party never stopped. How about that?

Earthquake Shakes Puerto Vallarta
Last week, Jun 29, 8:56 PM Vallarta got a little rock and roll shake from a Magnitude 5.9 earthquake centered in the Pacific Ocean about 51 miles from Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico. No reports of injury or damage to our precious Vallarta. Just rattled nerves, followed by massive amounts of tequila, followed by massive amounts of hangovers. Film at 11!
Tourist Suffers Injuries in Parasail Accident in PV
I heard about a woman being injured parasailing last month when Hurricane Bud was passing by Puerto Vallarta. I thought that the tow rope on the power boat had been severed when it flipped over in some high surf, and that the lady had fallen and had been injured, but I didn’t get this story. Here it is from CBS News….
To celebrate her 29th birthday, Katie Malone strapped into a parasail in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on June 9 and braced herself for an adventure high above the water.
The first few minutes went fine. But at some point in the ride, Malone saw that the boat supposedly pulling her along was going one way and she was flying in the other direction, approaching land. The line connecting them had snapped, she realized. Her terrifying flight ended when Malone crash-landed about 45 minutes later at an airport nearly 2 miles away, her brother Brendan Malone told CNN on Thursday.
The crash left her with a broken pelvis, four broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a blow to the left hand side of her face, he said.
But his sister is alive.
After 18 days in a Mexican hospital, Malone returned to the US on Tuesday for more treatment at UCSD Medical Center in San Diego. She has had three surgeries so far, and she remains in the hospital and is doing well, the family said.
“We’re moving up and up and she’s just doing so strong and so well,” Brendan Malone said.
‘She’s very lucky to be alive’
Despite the injuries, the crash could have been worse for Malone. At one point, she came close to hitting one of the balconies at the resort — so close that she could hear the people screaming. After the line connecting her to the boat broke, she started traveling down the coast line. From previous skydiving experiences, she knew to use her feet as an anchor, so she grabbed the rope with her feet, put her hands in the air and steered the parasail as best she could with her feet, her brother said.
“She was praying the whole time for her safety. She was mostly concerned about breaking her arms and legs,” Brendan Malone said.
She passed out about 20 minutes in.
Even after Malone crash-landed, there were more issues. Her brother said an alligator was by the fence near where she landed, and rescue workers had to scare the beast away to reach her. When family told her about the alligator, Malone says she “laughed and thought it was hilarious,” Brendan Malone said.
Her family later watched video of the terrifying flight that was filmed by one of her friends.
“I just fell down watching it,” Malone’s mother, Sidona, told CNN sister network HLN. “It was great to see her though. She’s very lucky to be alive and we’re really thankful for that.”
US Rep. Duncan D. Hunter and his father, former US Rep. Duncan L. Hunter, helped facilitate Malone’s return to the United States.
Brendan Malone said his sister was in “high spirits” during her time in the Mexican hospital.
“It was unbelievable. Throughout her stay, the doctors and nurses kept asking her what her pain level was — and she would say 8-10,” he said. “When she was ready to get in the ambulance (to start her journey back to the US), the doctors and nurses kept asking her about her pain level. She said she didn’t feel any pain at all.”
The family has received offers of help in terms of possible legal action against the parasailing company, according to Brendan Malone.
So, wow, Do you think the parasailing company is going to be sued? Get in trouble? My bet is no.
Also, let this be a warning to you, she had on travelers insurance. Now before some of you say hey, that parasailing stuff isn’t covered, you are wrong. Look it up. And by the way, while I was doing research on this subject, you will find many others who have suffered at the hands of these parasailing excursions, so be careful out there.
I have a link to this story along with video, in the show notes so have a look.

Now, remember last week we talked about the execution of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico? I got a note from Randle who writes…
This is a favorite period of Mexican history for me. After Maximiliano was deposed, his French soldiers were left stranded in Mexico by Napoleon III. Many
settled in Los Altos de Jalisco, where my wife was born. This is one reason for the preponderance of European Mexican (Gueros) in the region. This was confirmed by a discussion I had in Arandas, Jalisco in 2002 with a UCLA Sociology grad student who researched and verified this…
It should be stated that Maximiliano was not deserving of his fate. True, he was “recruited ” by Napoleon III to be his puppet in Mexico. However, both Maximiliano and empress Carlotta loved Mexico, and during their reign implemented positive changes, especially in Mexico City.
Thanks for that Randle. That’s very interesting regarding the French soldiers left behind by Napoleon the III, and their descendants living in Jalisco. And yes, twas a tragic end to the life of Maximilian, and at such a young age, at the age of 34. So, yes, there is so much more to the story and you know what? I will defiantly take it up another day, but until then, hold my beer, lets get on to the interview, shall we?
Los Muertos Brewing Company in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
I love beer, who doesn’t? But I have to say that for the most part, Mexican beers, while they are some of my favorites like Modelo, Pacifico, Corona, these beers are fine but from time to time, you just need a fine craft beer. Something that’s made in smaller batches with care.
My guest was the first guy to bring craft beer to Puerto Vallarta, and he was suggested by a couple of my listeners, and he’s a favorite of many of my guests who as you know, I weekly ply their favorite eateries and drinkeries from them and the name comes up all the time. So, it’s my great pleasure to take you to the corner of Calle Constitution and Lazaro Cardenas, and let’s have a seat at a table right smack dab in the middle of a place, a real nice place called Los Muertos Brewing Company, and let’s meet Conner Watts.
Listen to The Podcast
You know, Conner is a real great guy. Got to tell you though, I was expecting a much more mature guy. Conner is a very young man. And he has really built a great business right in the Heart of the Romantic Zone on the Southside, in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta. I have a map, links to the website and Facebook page and more including pictures of Los Muertos, Conner the food and links to things Conner and I talked about in the show notes.
