Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico.

El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club

That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta’s Oldest Restaurant on the famous Los Muertos Beach, and The El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club right next door so you can enjoy that fantastic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors, or during the day in its grand splendor for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with our toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so, Puerto Vallarta my friends.

Jorge Hoil Your Personal Chef in Puerto Vallarta

This week I have three different guests, the first is Jorge Hoil, a culinary talent who will deliver treats to your door in Puerto Vallarta, then I visit with Marcos Cisneros of Mariscos Cisneros, a taqueria and restaurant and another Taqueria, a favorite of many of my guests, I talk with the guys from Tacos El Cunado near the Los Muertos Pier but first, let’s see what’s happening this week the 7th of September, 2018.

Patriot Month is September in Mexico and Puerto Vallarta

We are coming up on all the Independence Day celebrations here in Puerto Vallarta coming up the 14th through the 16th of September, So next week, I’ll fill you in on the specifics as far as the planned events you should not miss if you are in town. I do have a calendar of events in the show-notes so if you are interested go to www.puertovallartatravelshow.com and find it there.

Festival Events

Because this week I have three food related stops, interviews, I originally thought I would take a deeper dive into a dish that traditionally is served September through October, a patriotic dish because it has the colors that represent the Mexican Flag, and that is Chiles en Nogada. But after doing the research, I’m going to wait till next week to tackle that subject. Just remember, that if you are in town this month, you will be seeing a lot of Chiles en Nogada on those restaurant menus but just wait till next week and you will get the whole story.

I didn’t realize that two of Vallarta’s most recognizable spots, the staircase that leads from Cuale Island up to Gringo Gulch, and the Los Muertos Pier, were in sunc bad condition, but here’s an article I found in the Banderas News, translated from AZ Noticias and it reads….

http://www.banderasnews.com/1808/

Two Puerto Vallarta Icons to be Restored by Year’s End

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – During an interview on Friday, Jalisco Tourism Secretary Enrique Ramos Flores told AZ Noticias that two important projects that will greatly benefit Puerto Vallarta – rebuilding the Cuale River staircase and rehabilitating Los Muertos Pier – will be completed before the current administration ends.

Although he acknowledged that they don’t currently have the resources to carry out both projects, he said that the issue would be

Los Muertos Pier

resolved in the coming months and that, with the participation of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust, City Council and Jalisco Tourism Secretariat, the work will be done before he retires from his position in December.

Ramos Flores said that the Isla Rio Cuale project is his biggest concern. The official explained that since the governor of the state made a commitment to the rebuilding of the staircase that leads to the island, he will see that it’s constructed before he leaves the tourism office. In that sense, he added that about one million pesos will be invested for this project.

With regard to the rehabilitation of Los Muertos Pier he said that, since it has become an emblem of Puerto Vallarta over the past couple of years, its refurbishment is a priority for the destination. He added that, after the pier’s renovation, maintenance must be performed on a permanent basis to prevent deterioration, which is the municipal government’s responsibility.

Stairs to Gringo Gulch

“The pier project warrants the support of both the state and the municipality,” he said, “because in its current condition, there’s a high risk of it suffering major damage.”

Original article translated and edited by Diego Sancho for BanderasNews.com.

So wow! Who knew? Maybe they need to get Natasha Moraga to tile both of them and call it a day! Oh, never mind. No mail please, just joking!

Listener Dining Suggestions For Bucerias

Speaking of mail, I got an email from listener and frequent contributor Skip from Minnesota, and Skip writes,

Greetings, Barry!

I want to share another of our favorite hole in the wall restaurants in Bucerias that we eat at frequently with our friends and family who visit us in the winter.

Tacos Linda’s Condiments

Tacos Linda’s is located on Lazaro Cardenas in Bucerias. It is on the south side of town past the mercado and the kissing bridge. The restaurant is open from 6:30 PM-11:00 PM and serves tasty and affordable tacos. I have attached a menu and a picture of the condiment tray that includes nopales, diced red onion, 3 salsas, lime wedges, taco chips and a small bowl of stewed beans for each diner. Alcohol is not available for purchase there but if you stop at the Oxxo a couple blocks away and pick up your own beer the waiter will keep it cold for you. I usually order the agua fresca or a soda that comes in a glass bottle much like those we had as kids back in the 1960’s.

Tacos Linda’s Menu

This is a humble sit down restaurant with maybe a half dozen tables with one hard working bilingual waiter. The owner, Linda is the head cook. Everything I have tried there thus far has been very flavorful and is a good value. My favorite tacos there are the huitlacoche, flor de calabaza, and the mushroom. My wife likes the beef tacos and the cheese quesadillas.

I hope that you have an opportunity to try out Tacos Linda’s when you visit Bucerias.

Skip from Minnesota

I have a couple of pics from Skip of Tacos Linda’s as well as a map for those of you who want a killer taco in Bucerias. And thank you Skip. You are our man, so far, in Bucerias.

A Five Star Review in iTunes

I got a 5 star review this week in iTunes from someone I know, someone you know, he’s been on the show and that’s Ray Di Ascenzi From Chicago.

I don’t know if you remember Ray, but I had him on the Cuates y Cuetes open mc show with Jose Ramos, the “Most Honest Bandito on The Beach” remember Ray? He fell in love with a beautiful lady from Vallarta, and got married. Well, Ray writes in his review….

Title: Introducing us to the people, places and the culture that makes PV the ultimate paradise!

Reviewer name: Ray D’Ascenzi

Rating: rss feed

Comment: Hey Barry. This is Ray from Chicago. Thanks again for allowing me to be on your podcast back in January and thanks for plugging me in 2 other episodes. I have definitely surpassed my 15 minutes of fame. 😂 This review is long overdue but much earned. For newbies to your podcast or season veterans like myself I would like to take a minute and first off give you 10⭐️’s for the job you do introducing us to the people, the places and the culture that is Puerto Vallarta. Your show is what people need to truly understand that Mexico is a beautiful country filled with love, life, music, delicious food, humble people and of course tequila. Mexico from time to time gets a bad rap for violence, drugs, etc. Those problems exist everywhere not just there. I’ve never felt in danger of my surroundings in PV unless I put myself in a bad situation. I had a plenty of those when I was younger in PV. Those stories can be saved for your rated R podcast. The places you go and the people you interview are what makes this show so entertaining. Learning the backstory of individuals and their struggles is what shows someone’s true character. Your recent interview with Jorge from Ándales I would have to say has been my favorite. Everything from his humble beginnings, his charity work and his longevity in the community is just a piece of what makes Puerto Vallarta great. For people who have never been to PV they don’t know what their missing. I’m going to be in town September 23-October 1st so I guess I’ll just miss you but hopefully sometime soon I can buy you a beer and we can started on that Rated R podcast. 😂 Thanks again Barry. Be Well.

Thank you so much Ray. I’ve been asked by a few listeners to do an “R” rated show. Maybe I’ll take you up on that next time you are in Vallarta. Sorry I’m gonna miss you by a day. We’ll get together soon, that’s for sure. Thanks again for the review Ray.

Meet and Greet at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse October 2nd and 9th

Meet and Greet Oct 2nd & 9th 2018

Now remember, I’m going to have two meet and greets at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse October 2nd and 9th at 5:30 with JR, and I didn’t announce the Cuates y Cuetes Meetup, let’s make it Wednesday October 3rd at 2 PM till 4. That should be hot enough for all of you! I’ll buy you a cold beer how’s that? Come on the show, and let us know what the heck you are doing in paradise.

Cuates y Cuetes Open Mic

I’m getting pretty excited guys, 22 days and counting till lift off. I’m sure all of you do that countdown. At least those of us who don’t already live in paradise.

Ok, well, let’s get on with the interviews…

Jorge Hoil, Your Personal Chef in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Many of us spend more than a couple of days or weeks in paradise. Some of you spend months, even years on end in condos and apartments and homes all around the bay. We can’t always cook. We can’t always go out. Sometimes what you need, is someone to bring you food to your door. This guest can do that and more for you. I’ve been following Jorge Hoil for a couple of years now and I wanted to bring his story to you, so without further adieu, lets go to the patio riverside, at Incanto Restaurant, Bar and Nightclub, where I had a conversation with the man from the Yucatan. Mr. flavor, Jorge Hoil.

What a nice man. And what a chef. I have pictures of some of his creations that you can order from him during the week. I have

Jorge Hoil Chile en Nogada

his contact information in the shownotes of this episode so check it out. I must say I was a bit disappointed that he didn’t share the names of his favorite restaurants, but by the sound of it, they are small, family owned hole in the wall places that if you get more than 6 people into, you never will get a seat. There are so many places like that in Vallarta.

Mariscos Cisneros Restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

My next guest is Marcos Cisneros from the famous Mariscos Cisneros in the Emiliano Zapata Neighborhood. This place was

Marcos and Ricardo Cisneros

suggested by my friend and friend of the show David Ostlund who runs Chef’s Pass Food Tours. Mariscos Cisneros is a Taquerilla, at taco stand made from stainless steel in front of a restaurant, bearing the same name. It’s located just off Lazaro Cardenas Street on Aguacate, across from the Inglesia de la Santa Cruz, this big beautiful church in the middle of the Emiliano Zapata Neighborhood. And I have a map in the shownotes so look for it if you aren’t sure where it is.

I was in the mood for some fresh ceviche tacos, so I wandered over to see what David was talking about. I sat down and ordered a civiche tostada, a couple of fish

tacos and shrimp cocktail and all were so fresh and delicious. So I asked the cook his name and he said Marcos Cisneros. We

talked for a little in Spanish, but then I thought I would try asking how his English was and sure enough, it was great! I asked if he give me an interview right then, but he was busy so I asked if I could return the following day. He said come at closing time, 4 PM, and he would talk with me. So I came back the next day, he was expecting me although he seemed surprised that I actually came back. I set up my microphones and had a chat. Lets go right now and have some of the greatest, freshest seafood to ever come from a taco stand, Aguacate 271 in the Emiliano Zapata Neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta, and let’s meet Marcos Cisneros, of Mariscos Cisneros.

Taqueria Tacos El Cunado in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Tacos El Cunado, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Now before we call it a day, to round ff this foodie fest, I want to take you to one of the taco stands in Vallarta that gets

Tacos El Cunado, Chef Marx

mentioned by so many of my guests. It’s the one that everyone says oh, it’s the taco stand near the pier. Near the Los Muertos Pier, just up the street, and that place is called Taqueria Tacos el Cunado. In Spanish, the word El Cunado means the Brother-in-Law. This place has been around since 1977, so a long time. Dang, I graduated High School in 1977 for goodness sake.

It’s a stainless-steel stand with lots of good seating, and it’s surrounded by beauty right there on Calle Francisca Rodríguez, so let’s go right now and pop in on these hardworking grilling geniuses, the boys at Tacos El Cunado….

Listen to The Podcast

Great guys and wow, the quesadillas and tacos they make there are outstanding. If you haven’t been there, you gotta go. The

Arbey and Jorge Mario

sauces and salsas are top notch. Clean, friendly and reasonably priced street food, in a location where you can actually find a place to sit other than a plastic chair or the curb.
