Thursday nights during the high season, November thru May, there is a giant marketplace at The Marina Vallarta with over 150 vendors and booths selling food, handicrafts and more. Many of these vendors are expats, creating items to sell to supplement their income in Puerto Vallarta and around the Bahia de Banderas.
Listen to The Podcast
Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico.
That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta’s Oldest Restaurant on the famous Los Muertos Beach, and The El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club right next door so you can enjoy that fantastic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors, or during the day in its grand splendor for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with our toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so, Puerto Vallarta my friends.

Crocodile Kills a Fisherman Along the Ameca River
Well it finally happened, someone got schmeised by a crocodile. From Puerto Vallarta Daily News…
September 3, 2018
Staff from the state civil protection unit of Jalisco in coordination with firefighters from Nayarit Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay
located the remains of a fisherman in the Ameca River. Missing since Monday the victim was attacked by a crocodile and presumably dragged to the bottom of the river on Monday, and the body was found 24 hours after the report. At 4 p.m. on Monday, fisherman from the river that divides Jalisco and Nayarit spotted a crocodile approximately 5 m long that had a human body between its jaws so the authorities were immediately notified. Firefighters went to the site and observed the crocodile repeatedly emerged and submerged in the water but emergency crews failed to capture the reptile. Tuesday the body of the victim appeared floating in the river but because it was severely lacerated it was impossible to identify the victim.
So far the deceased has not been identified and the crocodile has not been located.
So once again, just like last year, a fisherman got too close to a nesting area or stepped in the wrong spot along the river, but last year it was a similar incident, I think a local Marine. So my suggestion, no fishing along the Ameca river, the Pittial river for that matter. Just my takeaway. I have a link to the article in the shownotes.
Also, just more and more good news for you to digest.
Cases of Dengue Reported Up in Puerto Vallarta Municipality
Also from Puerto Vallarta Daily News dated September 19th, 2018…
More than 800 new cases of dengue were reported to the health authorities in week 36 of the current year September 3rd through 9th. Of these, 95 of them the classic type and 8 the hemorrhagic type. Puerto Vallarta is the municipality that presents the most patients with Dengue so far this year.
56% of the confirmed cases are concentrated in seven municipalities the Barca with 68 Guadalajara with 50 zapopan with 47 Puerto Vallarta with 35 and so on…
The numbers are relatively low, but still, let this be a warning to you my friend, wear your mosquito repellent. The mosquitoes that carry dengue bite during the daytime. JR talked abut that in a previous episode.

Upcoming Meet and Greets and Open Microphone Events with The Puerto Vallarta Travel Show
I got an email from Skip from Minnesota who caught a mistake I made a couple of weeks ago when I was announcing the open mic event in front of Cuates y Cuetes, so let me make the announcements for the meet and greet and open mics.
First, Tuesday the 2nd and Tuesday the 9th of October we will be joining JR at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse for his regular meet and greet at 5:30. We will set up shop hopefully on the upstairs patio and you can tell me what you are doing in paradise. Then Wednesday the 3rd, we will be in front of Cuates y Cuetes, toes in the sand for an open mic till, 2 till 4 in the afternoon.
Then another correction from my friend John who tells me I made an error in the address of Mariscos Cisneros. I said they were on 217 Aguacate, and they are actually on 271 Aguacate. So, a little dyslexic but at any rate, thanks for catching me on that error John. Much appreciated!
I got a suggestion from Melissa, she writes…
Hi Barry, my friends and I travel to PV every January and we’re looking for new adventures to try. Do you have any suggestions for cooking classes? Salsa class? Dance class? Also, we’ll be visiting Sayulita on our next trip to PV. Any suggestions for transportation, sites/restaurants to see? Btw, I love your podcast and look forward to new shows. I listen at work while I daydream about retirement lol. I’m 35 so I’ve got a ways to go. Thanks for all the inspiration!
Melissa, my wife Debbie and I just started taking salsa dance classes so I’m defiantly going to talk with some instructors. You remember that Roberto Castellon from Roberto’s Puerto Nuevo said he taught salsa dance, and I have a couple of friends who do as well so I will report back to you next month and give you some tips.
As for cooking classes, we just had Jorge Hoil who will come to your house and cook. We had Mavi Graf. You can go to her condo in the Marina and she will teach you to cook. Then there is Carmen Porras, she is great at El Arryan, or Ceasar at Gaby’s, all of these chefs I have already had on the show. I’m sure there’s more but check out those episodes if you haven’t listened to them.
Now getting to Sayulita, I say take the bus. It’s only an hour and a half ride. You need to get to the bus Stop in front of Walmart and catch the Compostela Bus, it’s green and white, and make sure the word Sayulita is written on the windscreen. It will cost you about 42 pesos, like $2.50 US. Those buses run between Sayulita and Puerto Vallarta from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm running every 20 minutes.
Tips and places to visit, let me get back to you on that I promise.
I got an email from Kathleen, and she writes….
Hey Barry!
First of all, thanks again for what you do. Your podcasts are awesome and extremely informative. I live here full time now and love to hear what’s going on in the area, I don’t always know.
Anyway, if no one has suggested this place yet, you have GOT to have Organic Select in Versalles on your show. That place is amazing! They are a store and a restaurant. Everything they sell is 100% organic, and yes, they have vegan stuff. They also have organic pet food! They even have CBD oil, and for a super low price.
Oh, and they deliver to anywhere in the Bay Area! How cool is that!
So check them out, I’m sure your listeners would love them!
Map of Organic Select in Puerto Vallarta
Okay, I will check them out in October and report back to you and let you know what I think. You got me interested when you said CBD oil. Very interested!
Okay, I’m sure I’ve forgotten something, but we need to get on with the interviews.
The Marina Vallarta Thursday Night Market in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
In Puerto Vallarta, and all along the Bahia, there are these, farmer’s markets. There’s the 3 hens and a Rooster, the Saturday Market at Lazaro Cardenas Park, There’s the Marsol Market every Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marsol Hotel next to the pier, then the Marina Vallarta Thursday Market, and all the way up from Bucerias, to Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Sayulita and so on.
These are not really farmers markets. You won’t find piles of fresh fruits and vegetables, no. You will find that they all are all a little different, but like a carnival travels from town to town, so do these Farmers Markets.
And you will find, many of these vendors are expats, doing something creative rather than sipping on an umbrella drink day in and day out. These folks are supplementing their incomes, to be able to live in paradise.
These people are doing things that they love and putting out their products to Vallarta visitors each and every day, traveling from town to town.
So, the market at The Marina Vallarta is an evening affair.
Every year, from every Thursday night from 6:00 to 10:00 pm through the end of May. There are literally over a hundred different vendors, maybe 200. They line the Marina Vallarta and the booths go on and on and on. There is music, expats selling alongside local vendors. Be ready to spend two or three hours, especially if you are going to eat at the marina.
Now even for me, as a guy who doesn’t like to shop, this was an interesting collection of items, and people.
So, let’s go and listen to some of the conversations I had with some of these people. I ran the interviews together, so I’ll have something to say after all the interviews. I have pictures of all these people, as well as the artwork and items they were selling in the show-notes for this episode so check them out.

Okay, that was kinda fun. I loved that French Artist who painted these miniature pictures, they were so beautiful, and the artist who painted with his fingers on tiles. You have to see the pictures I took of him and his art. Loved it. Oh and the mushroom guy, something different right? Well, actually this is magic mushroom season up in El Tuito. Hummm. Magic Mushrooms. Remember last week I said I would tell you about my experiences at Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City as a college student? Well, it involved magic mushrooms as a matter of fact, from Oaxaca I do believe, not El Tuito, but I just don’t have the time or the energy to tell that story today. Maybe another time soon.
Okay remember that the Marina Vallarta Thursday Night Market doesn’t get started till November, and goes to the end of May, so if you are in town right now, sorry.
I will make the announcement as soon as I know they are up and running coming up.
Now, a scheduling change, next week there won’t be a show, I will be getting ready to head out to Paradise, but I will have a show Thursday the 4th of October.
Also remember that if you are going to be in town October the 10 through the 14th, the Lions Club will be in town furnishing eyeglasses to the folks who need them in Vallarta. I will have more on that in the show on October 4th so stay tuned for that.
And if you have been wanting me to interview someone, or go somewhere while I’m in Vallarta, send me an email.
I think that should do it for this episode of The Puerto Vallarta Travel Show.
Next week, stay tuned for more on the ground reports from Puerto Vallarta Mexico, with travel tips, great restaurant and excursion ideas and more. Until then, remember, this is an interactive show where I depend on your questions and suggestions about all things Puerto Vallarta. If you think of something I should be talking about, please reach out to me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending us your message.
And remember, if you are considering booking any type of tour while you are in Puerto Vallarta, you must go to Vallartainfo.com, JR’s website and reserve your tour through him, right from his website. Remember the value for value proposition. His experience and on the ground knowledge of everything Puerto Vallarta in exchange for your making a purchase of a tour that you would do anyway, you’re just doing it through him as a way of saying thank you. It costs no more than if you were to use someone else so do it. Really. And when you do take one of these tours, email me about your experiences. Maybe you can come on-board and share with others what you liked or didn’t like about the tour. Again, contact me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending off a message. Don’t forget his maps, his DIY tours and his revitalized Happy Hour Board. I have links to all of those in the show notes.
And once again, if you like this podcast, please take the time and subscribe and give me a good review on iTunes if you would. That way we can get the word out to more and more people about the magic of this place. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Remember I made it easy for you to do just that with each episode I create. But if you haven’t been to my website, you really need to have a look there. I have the links to the places we talk about, interesting pictures and the more all right there in my blog-posts and show-notes for each episode of the show so check them out for sure if you haven’t already all-right? All right.
And thank you to all of you who took some time to talk with me at the Marina Vallarta Thursday Night Market. Get there while you are in town next time, and remember to check the dates of operation. November thru May. It’s a great experience.
And thanks to all of you for listening all the way through this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. This is Barry Kessler signing off with a wish for you all to slow down, be kind and live the Vallarta lifestyle. Nos Vemos amigos!
