Listen To The Podcast
Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico.
That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those
are La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta’s Oldest Restaurant on the famous Los Muertos Beach, and The El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club right next door so you can enjoy that fantastic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors, or during the day in its grand splendor for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with our toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so, Puerto Vallarta my friends.

This week I have a very special guest, she is a listener and a friend of mine Sharon Reynolds from Southern California and a
lover of Puerto Vallarta who has a ton of great suggestions for you for your next trip to paradise, but before we get to Sharon, let’s see what’s happening this week, the 28th of September 2018.
Crocodile Attacks a Tourist on The Beach in Front of The Puerto Vallarta Marriott Hotel
It happened again folks, and at a resort, a crocodile attack on a tourist this time.
It seems a 30-year-old woman, taking a stroll on the beach in front of the Marriott Hotel where she was staying. It was around 11:30 in the evening, so it was dark, and she must have stumbled upon a crocodile who took a chunk out of her leg, about 25-30 cm worth. She began screaming of course so the authorities were alerted. Luckily there was a private ambulance nearby and she was taken to the Hospeten Puerto Vallarta not far from there. Hum, I wonder, did she have travelers insurance?
I have a link to an article from Noticias PV in the show-notes if you want to have a look.
So be careful walking on the beach in the dark. It seems the crocodiles are straying from their usual digs. There is word that their natural habitat is being disturbed by the huge developments going on up north, and that’s what’s up. That’s why we are seeing more crocodiles, but I don’t know. Just be careful. Remember you aren’t going fishing along the Ameca, there are signs that state there are crocodiles all over there, but hey, whatever right? And now it seems, you aren’t going for a stroll along the beach in the dark without a flashlight okay? Of course, I have always suggested you don’t stroll the beach late at night in Vallarta, for safety reasons so there. Flashlight or no flashlight.
New 500 Peso Bank Note Enters Circulation
If you haven’t been to Mexico this summer, you haven’t noticed that there is a new 500 peso note. Let’s read from Mexico News Daily…
Images of former president Benito Juárez and a gray whale replace those of artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera on the new 500-peso bill which entered circulation today.
The Bank of México (Banxico) officially launched the new blue-colored note at an event in Mexico City, where it was announced that it is the “first in a new family of bills that pay homage to our historical identity and natural heritage.”
The central bank said in a video that “the ecosystem of coasts, seas, islands and the gray whale” and “the historic process of La Reforma [a 19th-century liberal reform] and the restoration of the republic” feature together on the new 500-peso bill.
Juárez, a Zapotec lawyer from Oaxaca who served as president between 1858 and 1872, now appears on two bank notes as his likeness is already featured on the 20-peso bill.
Although both notes are blue and feature Juárez, Banxico pointed out that the 500-peso bill is larger than the 20 and that the former is made of cotton paper whereas the latter is plastic. Bank of México governor Alejandro Díaz de León said the decision to change the 500-peso note was made because it is the most widely circulated and most counterfeited denomination.
The new bill features a range of security features including fluorescent ink, a dynamic thread, embossing perceptible by touch, a watermark and a multi-color denomination.
A new 200-peso bill, featuring independence heroes Miguel Costilla y Hidalgo and José María Morelos on one side and the El Pinacate desert biosphere reserve on the other, will enter into circulation next year, while a new 1,000-peso note will be issued in 2020. The latter will pay homage to the Mexican Revolution, with images of Francisco I. Madero, Carmen Serdán and Hermila Galindo on one side. The opposite side will feature Campeche’s Calakmul Biosphere Reserve.
The 500-peso bill was first issued in 1994 and featured an image of army general Ignacio Zaragoza. The Frida and Diego bill appeared in 2010 but will now be gradually withdrawn from circulation.
So, look for the new bills, coming your way. I already discovered my dog took one of those old Diego Rivera 500 peso notes out of circulation for me. I found a half-eaten one she had dragged out of my Mexico backpack. What a bummer.
I have sad news, Bud Bottoms, the creator of the Dolphin Fountain Sculpture on The Malecon passed away, John Strawn, the owner of the Loft Gallery left a nice heartfelt sentiment remembering Bud, it reads…
The Dolphin Sculpture on the Malecon will be flowing with tears; We’ve just lost its creator Bud Bottoms of Santa Barbara who passed away at 90 years of age. The fountain was a gift to the people of Puerto Vallarta from the Santa Barbara Sister Cities group in 1987. Bud was a wonderful spirit whose life exemplified the embrace of art, friendship, environmental justice and peace. Rest in Power Bud Bottoms!
So next time you walk past the Dolphin Sculpture, say a little prayer for Bud. 90 years….not bad.
Now before I get to the interview, let’s do a quick review of next week’s meetups… First, Tuesday the 2nd and Tuesday the 9th
of October we will be joining JR at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse for his regular meet and greet at 5:30. We will set up shop hopefully on the upstairs patio and you can tell me what you are doing in paradise. Then Wednesday the 3rd, we will be in front of Cuates y Cuetes, toes in the sand for an open mic till, 2 till 4 in the afternoon.
I’ll have some t-shirts for the lucky first few listeners, till I run out of course. And of course, if you have a local business you want to plug, this is the time to do it. We don’t bite, so come down. Otherwise, if you listeners have time, I would sure love to see you and to meet you too.
Okay, let’s get on with the interview.
Having Fun in Puerto Vallarta with Sharon Reynolds
I met Sharon Reynolds a few years ago on the rooftop of Barcelona Tapas, a beautiful restaurant with a Killer view, overlooking downtown Vallarta. I was there for one of Gary Beck’s foodie groups, and it was restaurant week. We had a wonderful dinner, and I had a chance to meet some really interesting people. It’ a great opportunity to meet new people, just keep that in mind, and I met Sharon and Bill, her husband, Mr. Bill to be more formal of course.
I wanted to introduce you to Sharon because to me, she represents the open-minded sort of free spirit traveler. Savvy, not naïve, a person who I think would make a great traveling companion, open to ideas, not stuck in a rut, not stuck on the same old places, but willing to explore.
Now Sharon is coming to us today from her home in California, and her environment is a little echoed, but other than that, it sounds really good. She has lots of great information and you don’t have to write down a darn thing, just go to the show-notes to this episode at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com, and you will find links, maps and pictures to all that stuff. With that being said, I do have a real job selling houses here in Los Angeles, and from time to time, I have a hard time getting the blog-post written and linked up and so forth on the first day of the release of the podcast. I add lots so stuff to the blog-post during the first three days, so if you have gone to the site and not seen everything I promised, go back a couple days later and it should be there for you. Okay?
Now, I recorded this interview last April, so it was just before JR’s Birthday Bash, and so that will give you a little clue as to the context of our conversation in spots, okay, all right, lets go right now to my friend and now yours, Sharon Reynolds…..

Advice to a first time traveler
Now next week, I will be in paradise. I hope to see some of you there, don’t be shy if you are in town. I will have some of those interviews next week, produced live from Puerto Vallarta, as long as everything works out as planned. I promise to avoid the crocodiles, that’s for sure.
I think that should do it for this episode of The Puerto Vallarta Travel Show.
Next week, stay tuned for more on the ground reports from Puerto Vallarta Mexico, with travel tips, great restaurant and excursion ideas and more. Until then, remember, this is an interactive show where I depend on your questions and suggestions about all things Puerto Vallarta. If you think of something I should be talking about, please reach out to me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending us your message.
And remember, if you are considering booking any type of tour while you are in Puerto Vallarta, you must go to Vallartainfo.com, JR’s website and reserve your tour through him, right from his website. Remember the value for value proposition. His experience and on the ground knowledge of everything Puerto Vallarta in exchange for your making a
purchase of a tour that you would do anyway, you’re just doing it through him as a way of saying thank you. It costs no more than if you were to use someone else so do it. Really. And when you do take one of these tours, email me about your experiences. Maybe you can come on-board and share with others what you liked or didn’t like about the tour. Again, contact me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending off a message. Don’t forget his maps, his DIY tours and his revitalized Happy Hour Board. I have links to all of those in the show notes.
And once again, if you like this podcast, please take the time and subscribe and give me a good review on iTunes if you would. That way we can get the word out to more and more people about the magic of this place. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Remember I made it easy for you to do just that with each episode I create. But if you haven’t been to my website, you really need to have a look there. I have the links to the places we talk about, interesting pictures and the more all right there in my blog-posts and show-notes for each episode of the show so check them out for sure if you haven’t already all-right? All right.
And thank you to Sharon Reynolds, you were great. Thanks for your time and for sharing your experiences with all of us. You have given other listeners the courage to come forward, and tell their stories about this place Puerto Vallarta.
And thanks to all of you for listening all the way through this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. This is Barry Kessler signing off with a wish for you all to slow down, be kind and live the Vallarta lifestyle. Nos Vemos amigos!
