This week we go to one of my favorite restaurants in Puerto Vallarta, Barcelona Tapas and we will meet the owner and creator Bill Carballo. He will tell us the story of this wonderful restaurant with a killer view of Vallarta. But before we get to Bill, let’s see what’s happening this week in Puerto Vallarta September 9, 2020.

49 Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta restaurants are ready to participate in the 16th edition of Restaurant Week, event that will take place from September 15th to October 10th, 2020.
Among the Puerto Vallarta participating restaurants are: Abbraccio, Archie’s Wok, Arrecifes Seafood & Steakhouse, Azafrán, Barcelona Tapas, Barrio Bistro, Basilio Comer & Beber, Blanca Blue, Bocados STK, Bravos, Café des Artistes, Di Vino Dante, El Dorado, Gaviotas, Gernika Pintxos Wine Bar, Hacienda San Ángel Gourmet, IK Mixology Bar & Cuisine, Joe Jack’s Fish Shack, Kaiser Maximilian Restaurant & Café, La Cappella, La Leche, La Palapa, La Tosca · Trattoria da Gaetano, Layla’s Restaurante, Le Kliff, Mikado, Pal’Mar Seafood & Grill Garage, Pezlimon, Poblanos Cocina Mexicana, River Café, Roberto’s, Serrano’s Meat House, Siam Cocina Thai, Sonora House, The Iguana Restaurant & Tequila Bar, The Rooftop, The Swedes, Trattoría Di Nuovo, Trio · Mediterranean Cuisine, Tuna Azul, UMAI and Vitea Oceanfront Bistro. On the other hand, the Riviera Nayarit restaurants that will participate in this culinary festival are: Culi’s Restaurant & Bar, La Peska, Loma 42 Bahía, Nicksan, Oso’s Fish Market Restaurant, Sabal Playa and Venazú.
This year’s event, whose extraordinary date was selected with the help of the participating restaurants, will be sponsored by Cristalería del Pacífico, a Vallarta’s company with more than 30 years of experience, which has been recognized as one of the best distributors of supplies for restaurants and hotel chains of international prestige; as well as by Vinoteca, a Mexican company with more than 20 branches in the country that, since 2015, was established in Puerto Vallarta to offer the highest quality wines and spirits from different parts of the world.
Organized by Vallarta Lifestyles Media Group, Restaurant Week has the support of the national and international promotion of the Riviera Nayarit Visitors and Conventions Bureau, as well as the different tourism authorities of Puerto Vallarta.
Restaurant Week provides diners in Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta with the opportunity to enjoy fixed-price, innovative three-course menus (with three options each) at some of the most prestigious restaurants in Banderas Bay.
“We know that this year’s Restaurant Week has the goal to help participating restaurants to start the next season properly. Given the recent events, we have to work hard to achieve the beginning of what, we hope, will be a strong return to our activities as a tourist destination,” shared Luis Mendoza, chief operations officer of Vallarta Lifestyles Media Group.

Cancellation of Independence Day Celebrations Due to You Know What
Of course we still have signs of the new normal..it can’t be all roses now. Seems that like in the US, Independence day celebrations will be cancelled. No fireworks, no music and entertainment on the Malecon and around the bay. No grito being delivered from the Presidencia Municipal. Nope, none of that unfortunately. Maybe the gente will have their own celebrations who knows right?
What’s Happening in Nuevo Vallarta
You might say how can it get worse? Well, if you are in Nuevo Vallarta across the rio Ameca in Nayarit, you won’t be able to buy alcohol for three days leading up to, and
including independence day on September 16th. From the 13th through the 16th, Nayarit will be a dry state. No alcohol sold in stores, markets, restaurants, bars….nada. So, stock up on booze right now. You only have 3 days. Still, you could just go into Vallarta and celebrate.
Magic Market at Puerto Magico Puerto Vallarta
All of the craft, farmers markets have been closed since the shut-down, and those were the Olas Altas Saturday Market, The Marina on Thursday nights, the La Cruz market, all of them have shut down for now at least, but we have a new market place over at the Puerto Magico, where the cruise ships come in, there’s a new mall really there, and my friend Dean Regehr gave me a tour of the place while I was there, we will have Dean on
in a few weeks as we get closer to cruise ships returning to Vallarta. But Dean has organized a new market, called the Magic Market, and right now he has 110 vendors. It all has to be Mexican made….well let me read you something from my buddy Marcia Blondin from the PV Mirror and Arte Viviente…she describes Dean’s project in her weekly article From Here..thusly…
Puerto Magico – a Magic Market
There’s a new kid in town! Are you a butcher, a baker, a candlestick maker? A musician, a mime, an opera singer, a clown, perhaps? Are you an organic gardener and need a venue once a week to sell your fresh veggies? Do you want to learn how to make chocolate, adobe bricks, dolls? What about a few dance lessons? Do you want to learn how to cook Mexican food? Do
you want to sell the special Mexican food you make every day? What about arts and crafts? If you make ‘em and want to sell them, keep reading. Do you want to sell your handmade products in a brand new, super clean, enormous, well-run market with zero politics, lots of
healthy competition and eventually millions of people walking past your work? The Magic Market presented by Puerto Mágico had its opening last Friday, with 72 vendors in place. This new Market will grow weekly, and the long-term plan is to be the biggest and best in all of Mexico. Puerto Mágico – A Magic Market Everything must be handmade or produced in Mexico. In other words, if you import “authentic Mexican” goods from China and/ or India, it will not be for sale at the Magic Market. The idea is to give a platform for indigenous craftspeople who are way off the beaten track; the gathering of these products has been underway for months under Teresita’s auspices who is in charge of Proyecto Semilla. Teresita travels far and wide, making arrangements for locally produced items far away from Vallarta to make its way here to Market. There will be carnival games, strolling musicians, a gift basket
raffle drawn daily with all proceeds going to that day’s selected charity. There is loads of free parking, clean bathrooms and lots of them. Who? You! What? A Magic Market Where? Puerto Mágico (where the cruise ships dock) When? Every Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. Why? To support local producers of all imaginable things and local charities. Anyone interested in participating as a vendor, entertainer, teacher of something cool, or a charity in need of funding/exposure, send me an email, and I will put you in touch with the powers that be.
And so can I. So if you have a product, or service, I can also get you in touch with someone who can help you. But this is a must visit place. You will be very impressed with Puerto Magico. There’s lots of free parking and of course, a cab will get you right to the front door.
Air Canada Offering Covid Coverage to Mexico..

Air Canada offers COVID-19 insurance at no extra cost in bid to entice travellers
The coverage, offered at no extra cost, will apply to southern destinations like Mexico and the Caribbean

Air Canada, struggling like airlines around the world as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to hit finances hard, has announced that it will offer Canadian travellersCOVID-19-based medical insurance at no extra cost.
The move, TVA Nouvelles reports, will apply to southern destinations like Mexico and the Caribbean, in a partnership struck between the Canadian carrier and Allianz Global Assistance, the German insurance firm. Brokerage firm TW Insurance Services is also involved in the new offering.
The extra coverage, which began Monday, will include quarantine accommodation expenses as well as emergency medical bills related to COVID-19, if a traveller contracts the virus while abroad. The program from Allianz, TVA Nouvelles reports, covers up to $100,000 per person travelling, per trip, and includes repatriation should a person die abroad.
“We’re pleased to be the first Canadian tour operator to ensure coverage is in place for emergency medical and quarantine expenses relating to COVID-19 … as a part of our vacation packages,” Nino Montagnese, managing director at Air Canada Vacations, said in a statement.
“We look forward to continuing to work with Allianz Global Assistance to turn our customers’ travel dreams into reality.”
The Canadian government is still, however, asking people to avoid non-essential foreign trips. Citing Canada Border Services Agency figures, TVA Nouvelles reports that land and air travellers crossing the Canadian border dropped some 95 per cent from March to August, when compared with 2019.

Beware of the old Let Me Help You Clean up Trick
More and more reports are coming up lately regarding people getting pick-pocketed around town. Here’s the scam…
Someone alerts you to the fact that you have something on your pants. The perp works with a group. One squirts catsup or mustard at you from behind so you don’t notice. Then someone alerts you to the fact that you have this mess on your pants and attempts to help clean you up. Suddenly you have a group of very concerned con-people, maybe escorting you to a washroom or something, or just cleaning you up, while they take your wallet and empty it. It can happen anywhere but often times it’s in a parking lot, or public place like a park. The best way to keep from being a victim, is to recognize the scam right away, and tell everyone around you to step away and don’t touch you. Don’t accept help from anyone, these are pros and con people. Extract yourself from the situation. Get in a cab or call a friend or summon an Uber.

Barcelona Tapas Restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Barcelona Tapas is located on Calle, overlooking Downtown Puerto Vallarta with a killer view of the tile rooftops and the Bahia de Banderas. I’m going to let William Carballo, the owner talk about the evolution of the restaurant, but I also wanted to
mention a project he alerted me to as he was giving me a tour of the restaurant the day I came to record the interview. Next to the restaurant, there was an empty lot that
wasn’t very pretty, it was kind of an eyesore. So Bill explained to me that he got together with the city, and they approved his plans to make the area more park-like, improve the pathways for his neighbors living above his restaurant and landscape it
with proper draining, so when you look up the street towards the restaurant, you see a park-like area instead of a trashy empty overgrown lot. It looks beautiful and make sure to check it out when you get to the restaurant.
The restaurant is on Calle Matamoros and 31st of Octubre, with a wonderful view.
