That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta’s Oldest Restaurant on the famous Los Muertos Beach, and The El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club right next door so you can enjoy that fantastic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors, or during the day in its grand splendor for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so, Puerto Vallarta my friends.
This week we are going to one of my newer favorite restaurants in Puerto Vallarta, It’s located in the Cinco de Diciembre neighborhood on Calle Honduras and it’s called Meño’s Place. We will talk with the wife of Meño, Nena Baltazar Salcedo about this cool rooftop restaurant with a view and great food, but before we get to Nena, let’s see what’s cooking in Puerto Vallata this week, the 7th day of November, 2020.

Week 1 of the Partial Shutdown Concludes with Fewer Cases of Covid
We are coming to the close of week one of the partial shutdown decreed by Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro. As I reported last week the emergency button was pushed on October 30, limiting nighttime activities to 8:30 in the evening, meaning restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shops not deemed essential. That leaves the tiendas, the little corner stores, OXXO’s, drug stores, hospitals. Busses stop running at 9 and so do Ubers. Taxi’s continue throughout the nights and morning hours with limits of 3 passengers.
Activities begin again at 6 in the morning, no changes other than the required health protocols.
Beaches close to the public at 3 in the afternoon to battle the rona. So get off my beach….that will stop the virus. And that’s the situation on the ground in Puerto Vallarta when I arrive on Sunday, to enjoy the last 6 days of the partial shutdown. So what will I be doing after hours? I mean, 8:30 is still early right? Will I just go to my humble Airbnb with my leftover dinner and a bottle of tequila and drink myself to sleep? Naaaa, just hop in a cab and head to Nuevo Vallarta where the beaches are now finally open, and there is no stoppage of restaurants and bars and shops, just across the border Actually, I have plans to spend some time in Nuevo this time down, and I’ll be bringing you those interviews as we progress through the year…..which is almost over if you haven’t noticed. Getting ready to start year five of the show. Who knew?
Speaking of taxistas, there is a bit of a rise in rates during the lockdown at night. Expect to pay an additional 10 pesos for rides around town in Vallarta. A bit of a tax thanks to the local government, for the opportunity to just annoy you just a little more, during your vacation.
I went in search of some traveler’s insurance that included covid coverage because Allianz and World Nomads travelers insurance, both companies I have used before don’t have that type of coverage, and low and behold, I found a company called Safety Wing, it’s used by a lot of digital nomads, and the coverage is pretty cheap and covers the rona. Not that I’ll need it, but just in case…right? I’ll just bring my drug kit with me and call it a week.
Cooler Weather in Puerto Vallarta
The weather has finally turned. Winter has arrived in paradise according to JR who says the humidity level has come down to bearable at long last, just in time for my visit. Very exciting, and without a doubt, it will be easier to wear a face covering in cooler weather as opposed to the August heat..which by the way, was not unbearable. I was expecting worse conditions but I’m used to October weather in Vallarta, so this was a piece of cake actually.
Open Microphone Podcast Meet and Greet at Kelly’s Pour Favor
Now we have a planned Meet and Greet at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse for Tuesday, November 10th, this is JR’s regular Meet and Greet day and location, I’m just horning in on his action. But we will be setting up on the roof, so great air circulation, social distancing for all interested in that kind of thing, and clean microphones for you to speak into. If you are a listener to the show, you know that the
open microphone meet and greet podcasts are fun, informative and always a surprise to me how good you listeners are when I get a microphone in front of you. So I can’t wait to meet those of you who are in town. You are the pioneers, the trailblazers, the beacon of hope to your fellow lovers of Puerto Vallarta, who are waiting to be told it’s okay to travel. It’s safe. So come on down Tuesday November 10th at 5:30, and let’s talk, eat, drink and have a good time. I have this event going to just 7, because some of you may have different dinner plans, and 8:30 is the cut-off time for that. So, Tuesday the 10th, 5:30 till 7 at Kelly’s Pour Favor.
Okay what else do we need to cover?
Oh, last week I told you about the wheelchair that was given to me by one of my clients, the hoarding cat lady. I’m bringing it with me on the airplane for our friend Salvador Estrada, the Candyman. Well I went online to see how Delta Airlines handles wheelchairs, and to my surprise, they don’t charge for me to bring the chair. I did have to let them know I was bringing one, and the size and what type of chair, but absolutely, no charge! I was very happy about that and good on Delta Airlines.
And speaking about airlines….I have news for you Canadian travelers….From Vallarta Today…Online…
Air Canada Passengers Are Being Rapidly Tested For Covid
SANTINI BRACHO 29 OCTOBER 2020
Air Canada announced that it is finalizing an initial order for 25,000 Abbott NOW COVID-19 ID rapid test kits to be applied in a voluntary test that will help protect both its customers and its personnel.
The airline, which recently partnered with McMaster Health Labs (MHL) and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) on a study for international travellers arriving in Toronto-Pearson, said preliminary results of the study indicate that the tests can help protect customers and facilitate the safe relaxation of government travel restrictions. Jim Chung, Air Canada’s medical director, said Air Canada continues to explore various options for testing Covid-19, and we are finalizing an initial order from Abbott for 25,000 rapid test kits for voluntary employee testing now that it has been approved for use in Canada. Understanding that we must live with this virus in the short and medium term, we have been looking for relationships and a layered approach as a way to keep our employees and customers safe. We believe that testing will be key to protecting employees and customers until the Covid vaccine is available. He added, “Rapid testing is also a means to allow governments to relax current general travel restrictions and quarantine in a measured way, while still safeguarding the health and safety of the public. Preliminary results from the study in conjunction with MHL and the GTAA indicated that conducting these tests is a shorter strategy, as well as an available and safe alternative to the 14-day quarantine. Air Canada is Canada’s national airline. Its hub is located at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal Quebec, Canada. The company was founded on April 10, 1936, and is one of the founding members of the Star Alliance of airlines.
So more opportunities and incentives for Canadians to travel to Paradise. My main concern is that Abbot Laboratories has a tracking app I believe, and I just don’t trust those tracking apps. But hey, that’s just me and my tin foil hat.
But we do have some good news to report…also from Vallarta Today Online…
Puerto Vallarta Goes Downwards In COVID Cases
SANTINI BRACHO 05 NOVEMBER 2020
First day in six months with no infections or deaths by the coronavirus.
Calls for health sector not to lower its guard on health measures by COVID-19. Last Monday, November 2nd, for the first time in six months, Puerto Vallarta registered zero infections of coronavirus and zero deaths. According to the official report of the Jalisco Secretary of Health, last May 10th had been the last day with zero infections of COVID-19 in Puerto Vallarta, and only one death due to this disease had been reported. According to the state agency, Puerto Vallarta has registered a continuous decrease in coronavirus infections since the second half of August, when a total of 965 positive cases of the disease and 55 cases of death were counted. However, the state agency warns that this does not mean that we should lower our guard or neglect the preventive health measures against the coronavirus among the population, since on the contrary, now is when preventive actions should be reinforced to guarantee that the drop is maintained. Last night, the Secretary of Health of Jalisco reported 16 more infections and 3 deaths in Puerto Vallarta. This tourist destination has a total of 25 positive cases and three deaths so far this month of November. SANITARY MEASURES The Secretary of Health, Jalisco, reported that in the first seventy-two hours after the emergency button was activated, the great majority of Jalisco residents complied with the provisions of this mechanism and few reports were received by the various municipal and health authorities regarding disrespect. As for the restrictions on operating hours, warnings and closures were limited to a few turns, since businessmen and traders are complying with the restrictions .
So very encouraging news at that, and you can find a link to that Vallarta Today Article, in the show notes.
Okay…let’s get to the interview shall we?
Meño’s Place a Restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
I travel on my stomach and I love good food. Vallarta is my culinary playground with every imaginable cuisine every price point, fresh, flavorful ingredients…it’s why we come here. And although when in Vallarta, you are in Mexico, it can be difficult to find a Mexican Restaurant serving traditional Mexican dishes.
I’m also a nut for a restaurant with a view. In Vallarta, that could be beachfront, it could be in a busy people watching spot like on the Malecon on a sidewalk café, it is many
times, a view from above like mountainside or rooftop restaurants with views of the bay and the rustic red tile roofs of Vallarta. So, this next place has that kind of view, of the
bay and the city and the red tile roofs. And this place is called Me And this place is called Meños Place. Meño is one of those Mexican Nicknames, short for Manuel. And Meño,
was a chef from s famous Vallarta restaurant, who went out on his own, and with the
encouragement of the lady we will be talking with, Nena, with the encouragement of his wife Nana, and others, opened up a lovely, rooftop restaurant in the heart of the Cinco de Diciembre neighborhood on Puerto Vallarta.
Meños is located on the roof of a very pretty condominium building on the corner of Calle Honduras and Bolivia. When you arrive at the restaurant, you enter through a very pretty colorful elevator lobby complete with artwork and mirror to check between
your teeth. The elevator is small, so be prepared to go up in small batches. When you arrive to the rooftop restaurant you will be treated with a beautiful view of the city, and a colorful restaurant, totally Mexican in it’s color pallet with lovely art, a big bar, an open
kitchen, and the most lovely and helpful staff. These people that Nena has working there are so good at what they do, and are so pleasant. Always. I really love this place.
My first visit there was about a year ago, when I was staying in an Airbnb right across the street. Every evening music would waft down past my window. They were always
busy and I figured I’d try breakfast, then later in the stay I tried Lunch, and later I had dinner. Every time the food was excellent, the service superb and the view was to die
for. That same trip I interviewed our friend at Layla’s who, when I asked her about some of her favorite restaurants she mentioned Nena and Meños Place. So, I made it a mission to get back and see if these nice people would talk with me…and guess what, they said yes. So let’s go right now, to Calle Honduras 348 and meet the queen of nice Nena Baltazar Salcedo, wife of Meño, and one of the smiling faces you will meet when you take that elevator ride up to

Get over to Meños the next time you are in paradise. For breakfast, lunch or dinner, it’s a pleasant place to catch a sunset, an evening overlooking the town lit up below you, a fresh morning breakfast with that view of the red tile roofs and the bay…just a great place and you must try it. You won’t be disappointed.

We enjoyed the Meno’s episode / review.
I was a bit confused trying to find it using Google maps, but eventually came to understand that the VERY COLORFUL picture you showed, is not what you see at that address using google maps, since the google photo was from 2017… It might be good to put a clarification note in your google map address link.
