Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler, and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico.
That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta’s Oldest Restaurant on the famous Los Muertos Beach, and The El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club right next door so you can enjoy that fantastic view of the Los
Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors, or during the day in its grand splendor for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so, Puerto Vallarta my friends.
This week we have a two fer. We are going to a meet and greet we had with JR at Nacho Daddy where we met a very interesting man, Humberto Pacheco, a partner with the property management firm called Naya.

Humberto teamed up with a very local property manager in Vallarta, the PV Kid, and they are offering property owners who would like to rent out their Vallarta or Nuevo Nayarit vacant condo a great service where they can make some dough. Then speaking of dough, we go to The Vallarta Food Bank to catch up on all

the things happening there. We’ll be talking with a couple who started project Jimmy Plouff and his wife Frankie Victoria at the food bank where they are expanding their services. In fact, they just opened a free clinic right there in their facility…We’ll be talking about that with Jimmy and Frankie in just a few minutes but before we get to Humberto at Nava, and Jimmy and Frankie at the Vallarta Food Bank, let’s see what’s happening this week in Puerto Vallarta, the 20th of April, 2023. Happy 4/20 day.
The Puerto Vallarta Travel Show Coming back to Vallarta
Tonight I fall asleep and tomorrow morning my wife and I will be flying into Puerto Vallarta Via Delta Airlines. Nonstop 3 hours, landing at 2:30 in the afternoon Vallarta time, and right into a manifestation, a big ol’ planned demonstration which is designed to cause all kinds of havoc. You know, I wasn’t going to report on this because it’s local and has to do with registering vehicles but well, because it’s happened once, and now is getting ready to happen again, here goes.
Big Demonstration Planned in Puerto Vallarta April 21st Against Auto Verification
The Jalisco Governor Alfaro, wants all those with cars in Jalisco, that includes Puerto Vallarta to have their cars and vans smog checked or verified. And nobody likes it. First, they see it as a big money grab. The drive through test costs 500 pesos per vehicle, and it’s very difficult it seems, for some of the older vehicles to pass let alone some of the newer ones. It seems the calibration of these smog testing machines is geared more towards cars made north of the border. Reading the comments of local Mexicans in the Facebook posts on the subject I read where one of the technicians at the smog verification center revved up his car so much, and abused it to the point, where he needed help pushing the car out of the testing center.
Last month was when the first protest took place. It was the 31st of March, and the streets were blocked, people were walking down the streets with their bags, from the airport. I have pictures in the shownotes of how that looked on the 31st, but here’s a post from my buddy Israel Andalon, our Salsa instructor hiker dude for the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show…it reads…
More than nine groups in Puerto Vallarta close ranks for the demonstration that is expected to paralyze the city tomorrow, Friday, April 21, in its main artery, Francisco Medina Avenue entered the height of the trucking center. Caravans from at least four points in the metropolitan area of Puerto Vallarta will head towards the verifier with the aim of demonstrating to the government of the state of government of Jalisco the nonconformity of citizens to the payment of verification in Puerto Vallarta. 200 uber drivers have expressed their support and participation as well as various Nayarit bay groups. It is invited to take precautions in what is expected to be an intense day in terms of mobility and possible tourist effects.
See Videos of the demonstration on March 31. Take your precautions.
So, thank you for the heads up Israel. We hope that by the time we emerge from the airport terminal at around 3:30 Vallarta time, things will have improved, or authorities will have made concessions. But we are prepared to walk from the airport like to Sam’s Club across from the Puerto Magico, and then into Pitillal. I mean, we travel very light Debbie and I. We each will have a daypack and a roller carry-on bag, and we can stop all along the way for tacos, beers, hey, there’s that place where everything used to be 20 pesos across from the Puerto Magico, have you ever been there? It’s called Cerveceria Chapultepec, and it’s a hopping place. A great place to watch a demonstration as a matter of fact. A manifestation. Everything used to be 20 pesos including the beer, but inflation has raised it’s ugly head and now instead of 20 pesos, it’s 27 pesos. And that reminds me, Oh…by the way, we’ll have Pat from Pat’s Plates PV. Our car registration expert come on the show to talk about this, well what seems like it’s a very important topic on the bay now doesn’t it. I’ll track down Pat over the next few days and see if he has time for lunch and a chat.
But getting back to money, I was prepping for the trip and I went to the local currency exchange that I use all the time, and I got 17.25 pesos to the US dollar. So, I used to get around 19.5 or so before the dollar weakened against the peso the beginning of the year. Then this….27 pesos per item instead of 20 at Cerveceria Chapultepec…things are getting expensive.
JR’s 83rd Birthday Bash
But beer is still cheap and at Gringo Loco, the beer is cheap and cold and if you are planning on being in Vallarta this Tuesday, the 25th of April you have to come celebrate JR’s 83rd birthday party with cake and music and dancing. The event begins at 3…well the drinking starts at 3, and the music and dancing, the live
music with the band Paranoia begins at 6. It will be a lot of fun, I’ll have my microphones with me and I intend to record some of you who want to step up and give us your Puerto Vallarta story. If you have a charity you like
and want to give them a shout-out, I want to hear that passionate shoutout for goodness sake. If you just want to say hi and wish the birthday boy a happy 93rd trip atound the sun, please do stop by. The Protest should be over by then right? Of course it will. That’s Tuesday, April 25th at Gringo Loco Cantina in The Romantic zone. The whole thing starts at 3. Come whenever you like and say hi. Happy birthday JR.
Botanical Gardens are on their Summer Schedule. Closed Mondays until December
Botanical Gardens are on their summer schedule. Closed Mondays until December. Bob Price, Creator and Curator of the garden says it their best year ever, and I can tell you why. It’s because it keeps getting prettier and prettier and the plantings and trees are maturing beautifully.
They are still open, in fact I’m going down there next week for breakfast and a morning tour with the wife who’s never been to the Botanical Garden. Imagine that.
The Summer hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 9 till 6. I have all the contact information in the show notes. Also remember that the new bus stop for the Botanical Garden moved a block south from where it used to be while they build a condo which…did they stop building on that one? Yes they did have a work stoppage on that one across from the Inglesia de Santa Cruz The Project is called D’vine.
Hey, I don’t want to start any rumors, just reporting the news. At any rate for now, the new bus stop for the Vallarta Botanical Garden and El Tuito, is at Aguacate and Basillio Badillio.
And as I’ve been saying, the wife and I will be heading to the garden then up to El Tuito where we will be sampling raicilla and visiting some new restaurants and some old friends and I’ll fill you in on what’s happening in El Tuito, where they have been having some forest fires in the surrounding hills. It’s dry and still about 2 months before the rainy season kicks in.
Listener Emails
A look into the ol email bag, if you remember a couple of weeks ago I read an email from Jason and Lisa who are lovers of Vallarta, and who got married, actually planned a destination wedding in paradise. So I asked them and anyone really, if they wanted to share what that experience was like. We’ve never talked about the subject I’m pretty sure. So, I got an email from the Bride and Groom Agreeing to come on and tell us their experiences planning and pulling off a wedding in paradise. I’ll be sending you a microphone when I get home from my trip Lisa and Jason. I need all my microphones for this trip down. I also got a suggestion for a wedding planner from Listener Troy, and I’ll be reaching out to her Troy. Thanks for the recommendation amigo. Troy has sent me a couple of great recommendations by the way, and you can too, just saying. If you do know anyone else who’s had the same experience, the getting hitched in Puerto Vallarta Experience that is, I’d like to hear from you…or them.
I also got an Email from listener Derek from Canadia who writes…
Barry, Just wondering with the amount of time you spend in PV and you being a real estate agent, how come you haven’t purchased a property down there?
Gracias, Derek
So I answered Derek
Hola Derek!
I ask myself that question a lot lately…lol…
It’s kind of a long story.
My wife and I were partners in crime for many years, about 20, with her youngest brother, John and his college friend Chris, buying and then renting houses around the US. We had rentals in Cali, Las Vegas, North Carolina and Alabama.
I think we never bought in Vallarta because you needed to purchase in cash, and not play with the bank’s money, which was our model, and it worked well for a long time.
Luckily for us, we sold all the property just before the beginning of the pandemic, so we weren’t hurt badly like many who couldn’t get rent money from their tenants.
Having said all that…we are currently getting our house ready for market, and we are moving to Mexico before this winter. So yeah…shoulda a few years back…but no time like the present amigo. Lucky for us we have been really busy selling homes for clients, so good to have money flowing in while we make our plans to split.
I’ll be looking for a simple Mexican casa, in a Vallarta colonia to live out my days Derek. And soon. You are welcome to visit anytime amigo.
So that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
How about you? Are you thinking about it? You got plans?
Thanks so much for writing and listening amigo. It means so very much to me.
So yes, my wife has agreed to move to Mexico with me. How about that? I’ll be looking around this trip down and then again in July but it’s happening.
And I’ll be taking you along with us as we take that adventure. I’m pretty excited about that I’ll tell you what!
Now I did get an answer from Derek who tells me that he never gets more than a month at a time in Vallarta, and if he were going to buy, he’d need to rent out the unit, from Canada, in order to make buying in Vallarta work, and that is where my next guest comes in.

I announced a meet and greet at Nacho Daddy the last trip down in February, and the plan was to piggyback on JR’s Tuesday meet and greets, and friend of the show Jeff Musto, The PV Kid asked if he could introduce me to his new business partner in Vallarta, Humberto Pacheco. And in a nutshell, what Humberto does is helps folks rent out and manage their Vallarta, or Nayarit properties legally, safely and virtually worry-free. So let’s go, without further ado, to Nacho Daddy on Basillio Badillo 287, and cozy up to a beer and meet my friend Humberto Pacheco, partner at Naya Homes, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Listen to The Podcast
Thank you very much Humberto. Very exciting what you have planned for homeowners in Vallarta who need good property management to make them money, while they are away from their Vallarta dream home.
Next, we take you to the Vallarta Food Bank in Colonia Lopez Mateos. As many of you know, who listen to the show, the Vallarta Food Bank came into being during the pandemic. Founded by friend of mine and friend of the show Jimmy Plouff and his wife Francie Victoria, and buoyed by a group of dedicated and caring staff and volunteers, this group, this organization has fed hundreds, and kept many of them alive, and now healthy.

When I recorded this interview Jimmy and Francine were in the process of putting together a medical clinic. And at the time of the recording it wasn’t all together, but I’m happy to say that they did complete it, so the
free clinic is now operating, but Jimmy and Francie will be talking about that, and a whole lot more, so let’s go now, to colonia Lopez Mateos, C, Río Lerma 468, and let’s visit with my friends, Jimmy Plouff and Francie Victoria, Vallarta Food Bank, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Listen to the Podcast
Thank you Jimmy and Francie. What an incredible job you have done and are doing and will continue to do for the most vulnerable in Vallarta. Jimmy gave me some of those business cards and I showed them to a couple of
my Mexican friends who said that the Vallarta food bank was there for them, when there was nothing and they were hungry during the shutdown and the pandemic. These were people who owned small businesses and
restaurants too. Folks I never would have imagined would be needing help. The Vallarta Food Bank was there for them. It was incredible and I was amazed at how many people I know personally, who were helped by The Vallarta Food Bank.
Remember that ask for left over medications you may have that you can leave with the Food Bank for their free clinic, they can use your stuff so remember to keep them in mind for that.
You know, when you were talking about that free clinic, I used to work in the LA Youth Free Clinic in Van Nuys California, where I spent a semester volunteering there, 3 nights a week, translating for the interns from USC, and UCLA, future docs who were doing their mandatory volunteering assignments. I’d translate back and forth, doctor to patient. The doc would ask me to ask the patient questions, then I would do the translating
thing. That’s where I found out people treat folks in white lab coats differently than others. Yup, they had me in a lab coat, translating, drawing blood too….oh yeah. The LA free Youth clinic. You knew when you asked
someone on a date if she was on birth control, I’ll tell you that. Oh, I have some stories I can tell from those days. 3 days a week for a semester. What a time. So once again, I’m not a doctor, I just dressed up like one for like…12 weeks.
Anyway, where were we, what a cool thing the Vallarta Food Bank is doing. All the programs they have added to that still very real need to feed approximately 5-800 servings of food to the local residents who are in need. Six days a week. That alone is a miracle but all the other programs that Jimmy and Frankie talked about, the
showers, the washing machine services, that market they have, the fresh water faucet to fill up garafons of water saving hundreds of pesos a week for people who can then spend that money on other basics. Everything they do, the education and drug and relocation rehabilitation they do is outstanding and in the show notes.
I took some pictures while I was there, and you can find them in the blogpost for this episode. I also have links to their social media pages and their website where you can set up a monthly donation that Jimmy was talking about to keep their programs running smoothly. It’s all in the show notes at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com, or just google vallartafoodbank.org.
Now if you are in town this coming April 25, come to JR’s birthday bash at Gringo Loco from 3 till 6 for drinks and maybe a few interviews if you an come. Then the band starts at 6. Be there if you can. We’d love to see you there. Tell us your Vallarta Story. We’re all ears.
And…that should do it for today…next week Maybe from Vallarta, stay tuned for more on the ground reports from Puerto Vallarta Mexico, with travel tips, great restaurant and excursion ideas and more. Until then, remember, this is an interactive show where I depend on your questions and suggestions about all things Puerto Vallarta. If you think of something I should be talking about, please reach out to me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending us your message.
And remember, if you are considering booking any type of tour while you are in Puerto Vallarta, you must go to Vallartainfo.com, JR’s website and reserve your tour through him, right from his website. Remember the value for value proposition. His experience and on the ground knowledge of everything Puerto Vallarta in exchange for your making a purchase of a tour that you would do anyway, you’re just doing it through him as a way of saying thank you. It costs no more than if you were to use someone else so do it. Really. And when you do take one of these tours, email me about your experiences. Maybe you can come on-board and share with others what you liked or didn’t like about the tour. Again, contact me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending off a message. Don’t forget his maps, his DIY tours and I have links to all of those in the show notes.
And once again, if you like this podcast, please take the time and subscribe and follow share with a lover of Puerto Vallarta or give me a good review wherever or however you happen to be listening. That way we can get the word out to more and more people about the magic of this place. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Remember I made it easy for you to do just that with each episode I create. But if you haven’t been to my website, you really need to have a look there. I have the links to the places we talk about, interesting pictures and the more all right there in my blog-posts and show-notes for each episode of the show so check them out for sure if you haven’t already all-right? All right.
Thanks so much to our new friend Humberto Pacheco from Naya Homes Puerto Vallarta. I have links in the show notes or google Naya Homes Puerto Vallarta and you will find them. Contact them to set up an appointment to make your condo, your villa or casita work for you while you are away with little stress, from your home far away. It’s worth a call. And if you are looking for a vacation property, check them out of course as well. Thanks Jeff Musto the PV kid, for introducing Humberto to me my friend. See you in a couple of days for a beer. Maybe you have a new restaurant you.ve discovered you can share with me and Debbie.
And thank you so much to Jimmy Plouff and Francine Victoria from the Vallarta Food Bank. Oh, and Francine Nugnun, from Bonita Kitchen who I missed this trip down, It’s an amazing effort and an incredible job you all do. And all the volunteers who donate your time, and sweat…thank you so much. Think about chipping in when you are in town. And to those of you who already donate and give money, thank you. If you are thinking about giving a monthly sustainable donation, it’s very much appreciated and goes to a glorious cause, feeding, and helping the people who need help, in Puerto Vallarta.
Remember Vallarta Food Bank when you have extra meds and clothing too. Go to Vallartafoodbank.org for all the details.
And thanks to all of you for listening all the way through this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. This is Barry Kessler signing off with a wish for you all to slow down, be kind and live the Vallarta lifestyle. Nos Vemos amigos.
