Listen to The Podcast

Hello fellow travelers, welcome to this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler, and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, in fact my new home, and maybe even yours too and that’s Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are The Le Bistro Jazz Café, riverside on The Isla Cuale, and the La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta’s Oldest Restaurant on the famous

Los Muertos Beach, and The El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club right next door so you can enjoy that fantastic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors, or during the day in its grand splendor for breakfast, lunch or dinner,

seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. Or riverside at Le Bistro, it’s so romantic, it’s so, Puerto Vallarta my friends.
This week I’m going to take you to one of my all time favorite family owned and operated restaurants in Vallarta. It’s called Restaurant Adobes. I’ll introduce you to my friend Jose de Jesus Montes Loyola, one of the sons of owner and head chef Vicente Montes. You’ll hear the story behind this culinary gem.
Pickleball is all the rage in Canada and in the states and evidently in Puerto Vallarta as well. I’ll talk with our friend Jesus Garcia Placencia at La Huerta BBQ about their new pickleball courts and with Canadian Al Witt, who runs the pickleball club there at La Huerta, and also Dwane Valentine will tell us about the pickleball courts now available at Puerto Magico.
I stopped by the Saturday Market at Tile Park and spoke with Samuel Resendiz about some Vallarta History, well some Vallarta trivia, and also caught up with Gabino the pull tab purse guy. We have a lot of things happening in Puerto Vallarta, lots of local news as high season is in full swing in paradise. It’s been a long time since we’ve talked. Too long, and I apologize for that. So, a belated happy new year to you. . I needed a little break to get settled and to record some great interviews. I need to tell you that I truly appreciate your listening as we start year number 9 of the podcast. I can’t believe it, I really can’t. Let’s see what’s happening this week in Puerto Vallarta,15th of February, 2025.

Well, It’s been some time since we talked…
We moved from the El Cerro Neighborhood above the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, to a more permanent location across town in Colonia Alta Vista, very close to where Casa Isabel is located. The yellow house on the hill. Debbie and I found a real nice two bedroom, two bathroom apartment and we signed a one year lease, while we look for a home to buy. We’ve moved now a total of 4 times since we arrived on the first of September, and I think we are done moving at least for now.
So, I’m currently coming to you from my outdoor studio on our balcony which has a beautiful bay and city view. There’s unfortunately lots of construction noise during the days which makes it hard to record. But during the evenings, it’s pretty quiet, and well, let me know if the audio is not up to par, okay?
The wife and I can finally get down to doing some nesting. Unpacking all our stuff for example. Buying our own sheets and pillows, cooking utensils, pots, pans, spices, pantry stuff. You know, so we can actually cook homemade meals to supplement the incredible amount eating out at all of restaurants and great food in this town.
And shopping for all those things means we get to go inside all the shopping places I never visited as a tourist. Stores like Copell, Soriana, Walmart, Woolworths, Lans Department Store, Costco of course. How can we forget Costco? We’ve also learned and you’d be surprised at what you can buy at the Farmacia Guadalajara. Milk, coffee, beer, bread, drugs, yogurt, granola, lunch meat, cleaning supplies, tons of items.
I’ve even had two Amazon.mx deliveries. I bought a crockpot; nobody sells them down here. A salad spinner and a book for Debbie delivered right to our door. I feel like a native for goodness’ sake. That was super exciting for me.
I had an adventure visiting a carneceria, the butcher. The adventure was having to learn the names of the different cuts of meat in Spanish. That was a trick. Ground beef is called carne de res molida. The butcher asked me if I wanted it mixto. Mixed. I was a little confused and she said with ground pork, cerdo. I said no solo de res or only beef. So that was interesting to me and something I’ll need to remember when I’m ordering ground beef. But yeah, I have a few new words to learn in Spanish, that’s for sure. Always learning and by the way, speaking of learning, Debbie now has a whopping 575 straight days of learning Spanish using Duolingo. And yes, you can tell she is really getting it. I’m very proud of her. I get out of a cab to get a couple of sixpacks and when I get back, she’s chatting up the taxista. They love her.
Talking about learning the ropes, we also needed to teach ourselves how to properly clean the fruit and veggies here like washing and soaking in microdyne. It’s not as difficult as I thought it would be, that’s for sure. Our landlord has installed a water filtration system in the kitchen, so that makes our life here much easier. Oh, and we now have our own washer and dryer too. And a pool! And a really nice view of the city and the bay. Yeah, it’s pretty cool.
So, we are learning how to live here. We do a lot of binge watching the ocean. We walk just about everywhere.
We had originally hoped to buy the house we found last year in Cinco de Diciembre. It was really close to the cemetery, so quiet neighbors, right? And we even went as far as making an offer and hiring a building inspector to look over the property. The inspector was an engineer and one of these professional court witnesses that gets hired to represent folks suing builders selling Shoddy built buildings.
Well, after he looked it over he said don’t buy it. The top floor was put on incorrectly among other things. So, we passed on that one. And we are planning on buying when we find the perfect place that checks all our boxes, but we are really happy to be able to just stay in one place for a while.
Puerto Vallarta’s New Trash Collection System
Puerto Vallarta has a new trash collection system. If you have been to Vallarta, you know that the trash collection system is wacky.

Depending on where you live, or do business, trash in this town is piled up in designated locations where it sits, waiting for collection. And it sits, sometimes for days, depending on where you are, as I said.

Places downtown, and Cinco de Diciembre, and the Zona Romantica, where there are lots of restaurants and shops are going to get more frequent pickups, sometimes even twice a day. And that’s a good thing because the restaurant waste begins to rot and smell, pretty quickly sitting in the tropical sun.

And whether the trash sits for hours, or days, before it gets picked up by the trashmen, it inevitably gets picked through by humans, dogs, cats, chickens, you name it. And sometimes that makes for even more of a mess. Plus, the trash sits on the

sidewalk, or sometimes in the middle of the street. And the spot where it sits, well, you can see where the spot is, even after the trash is picked up. I mean, that’s how you know where to pile your trash, right? And it’s a greasy, dirty, sticky spot, and an outright oil slick when it gets wet. I know. I’ve slipped in one. It was really gross. So, avoid these spots especially after a rain, at all costs. There, you’ve been warned.

And that’s also one of the reasons they want to change the way that trash is being collected in Vallarta. Because when it does rain, and it does, quite a bit, during that thing they call “the rainy season” down here. And when it rains, the trash gets spread all over the place, including into the rivers and the bay.

But the reason we are having this trashy lesson is, as I mentioned, Vallarta is trying a new method of trash collection.
They have a fleet of new trash trucks which are white and green, a new collection company called Red Ambiental with the employees wearing white and green matching jumpsuits. And they wear gloves too. Unlike the former trash collectors. Those guys were a rough crew.

They have divided the city into five zones and trash is picked up almost every other day. For example, in our neighborhood of Alta Vista trash collection happens Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays between the hours of 6 in the morning till 2 in the afternoon. Where our friends Ray and Deb live in Pitillal, their schedule is Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from sometime between 2 and 10 in the evening.
Downtown, the romantic zone, the hotel zone and parts of town that have lots of restaurants get a pick-up every day.
Now, the program got off to a rough start where trash was piling up, all around town, but the new administration, has taken this particular project very seriously, and really want it to work.
The trucks have a bell, attached to the trash truck, with the ding string in the hand of the driver. When the driver is getting ready to collect the trash, they ring the bell, and it sounds like this…
I actually hung out my recorder over my balcony to record it as it went past our apartment. Now when the residents of the colonia hear the bell, they’re supposed to run out with their trash, that is if they haven’t already, and throw it on the neighborhood trash heap, and those new trash trucks will pick up your trash during the prescribed times in the schedule I explained to you earlier. It sounds like the Monty Python Movie, I think it was the Holy Grail where they were picking up the dead during a plague. Remember that one? Bring out your dead…clang. But instead, its ding, ding, ding…bring out your trash….ding, ding, ding…bring out your trash. In fact, if you listen to my recording, I think you can hear him say, bring out your dead, trash. I mean.
Listen…
Listen to The Podcast
The whole idea is to get the trash off the street, except during the designated trash pickup times and dates.
I have a link to the Facebook Page of Red Ambiental, the Vallarta trash collection company, and it looks like they do post something every day, in the show notes.
https://www.facebook.com/redambientalmx
The question is, will it work? It’s hard to tell, but I think it might catch on. The crews are working very hard here with from 3 to 5 crew members per truck, including women by the way.
The biggest problem with the plan is most people don’t have the ability to store trash in their homes or yards. People don’t have trash cans they haul into the streets. So, if it builds up, here in the tropics things deteriorate quickly. Food rots fast, so it can get stinky if you don’t plan your waste management correctly.
I have pictures of piles of trash, and of the new trash company hard at work, in the show notes.
Modonnari Festival 2025, February 14-16
If you are in town this Saint Valentines Day, besides making that reservation at your favorite Vallarta romantic restaurant you should get to Vallarta City Hall and Plaza de Armas to see some masterpieces in the making. The Madonnari Chalk festival will

be taking place Friday the 14th through Sunday the 16th, and artists will be on all fours, creating mini murals on the sidewalks. You need to see the finished products as well as the spectacle of the competition. The first place contestant will win a trip to

Santa Barbara California, to participate in their huge festival they have over at Mission Santa Barbara in May. Don’t miss it if you are in town.
Whale Season in Vallarta 2025
Whale season is turning out to be very busy this year it seems. If you have a room with an ocean view in fact, like we do, you’d have a hard time not seeing one or two of these giant creatures jumping out of the water and making a big splash, or spouting off making a mist that’s easy to spot as well. You know, Thar she blows? I had no idea it was so easy to spot them but when you see the size of these creatures, the adult whales get as long as 46 to 56 feet in length and can weigh up to 40 metric tons. So these suckers can make a really big splash when they breach, or jump in the air. Make sure to bring a pair of binoculars with you when you are packing your bags. And when you decide to break them out to spend some time scanning the ocean surface. Look for that mist from their spout as you are scanning. That’s the easiest way to spot a whale. Or, just look for a bunch of boats out on the bay in a circle. Most likely they have some whales doing their mating dance with a bunch of strangers looking on. So make sure to bring a pair of binocs with you when you pack your bags, especially during whale watching season which stretches from December till March in the Bahia de Banderas. January and February being the most active times to watch whales here. The kind of whales you’ll be watching are the humpback variety. They come down from the arctic to feed, mate, give birth and drink tequila, of course.
So, you might say hey Barry, I get the eating part, but how are these whales mating and giving birth at the same time? Well, humpback whales have a gestation period of between 11 and 11 ½ months, so those mother whales giving birth now, were mating lasts year. It’s a vicious cycle ain’t it?
Female humpbacks become of mating age between 4 and 9 years of age and will have a baby every three years or so, and Humpback whales have a lifespan of 80-90 years by the way.
If you want to get really close, look for a whale watching tour. There’s many to choose from as well as on JR’s website. I’ll link JR’s whale watching tours atVallartainfo.com, in the show notes.
New Taxi App Like Uber in Vallarta Called Yellow Taxi PV

Hey, looks like the yellow taxis are doing some modernizing, fighting Uber with fire with their own new app for your smart phone, it’s called Yellow Taxi PV and here’s an article from the Banderas News dated January 23rd, 2025…
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Traditional yellow taxis in Puerto Vallarta are modernizing their services with the launch of the “Yellow Taxi PV” mobile application. Available for download on iOS and Android devices since January 15th, this innovative platform allows passengers to easily request a ride directly from their smartphones.
The article continues…
Marcelo Castillo Gómez, representing the local taxi union, officially unveiled the app, emphasizing its commitment to fair and consistent fares. Unlike ride-sharing services that utilize dynamic pricing models, Yellow Taxi PV will maintain fixed rates, ensuring predictable travel costs for passengers, regardless of weather conditions, special events, or traffic congestion.
“We are excited to offer Puerto Vallarta residents and visitors a convenient and reliable way to access traditional taxi services,” stated Castillo. “The Yellow Taxi PV app provides a seamless user experience while upholding the integrity of our established pricing structure.”
Passengers can conveniently pay for their rides through the app itself, using the onboard credit/debit card processing terminal, or in cash. Furthermore, there are no cancellation fees, providing passengers with added flexibility and peace of mind.
To encourage adoption, the app is offering a 20-peso discount on the first ride for all new users. Additionally, the union is urging all taxi drivers to join the platform by registering through the official Yellow Taxi PV website.
While the initial number of participating drivers is currently around 60-70, representing a small fraction of the approximately 1,700 taxis operating in the city, the app’s developers are confident that user growth will drive increased driver participation.
This latest initiative marks a significant step forward for the local taxi industry. Following a previous attempt with the Official Taxi PVR app in 2019, which saw limited success due to low driver participation and minimal promotion, Yellow Taxi PV aims to establish itself as a reliable and accessible transportation option for both residents and tourists alike.
By embracing technology while upholding the values of traditional taxi service, Yellow Taxi PV strives to create a balanced and sustainable transportation ecosystem for Puerto Vallarta.
And I have a link to that article from the Banderas News, in the show notes at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com
I also includes all the contact information for Yellow Taxi PV in the show notes as well as a link to their Facebook page. I have downloaded the app onto my smartphone, and I’ve used it as well. Look for it in the play store on your phone.

Plans for a New Pier and Malecon Development in Cinco de Diciembre in Puerto Vallarta
There’s plans afoot to build a new pier, not where the old pier is, but up the street a little bit to Cinco de Diciembre and Camerones Beach, and it’s coming with a boardwalk too.
Here’s another article from the Banderas News…
Puerto Vallarta and Cabo Corrientes are set to benefit from enhanced maritime mobility with the construction of the new Las Peñas pier at Camarones Beach. Announced by Governor Pablo Lemus, this ambitious project aims to modernize the area while preserving its charm, supporting both locals and tourists alike.
Located near Hotel Rosita, where Uruguay Street meets the ocean in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood, the pier will feature a design inspired by the iconic Los Muertos Pier. Spanning 140 meters, it will include a metal canopy, pedestrian lighting, benches, and a spacious viewing point for stunning coastal vistas. With an investment of 430 million pesos, Las Peñas promises to become a new focal point for Puerto Vallarta.
Governor Lemus emphasized the importance of harmonizing the city’s urban image, particularly in the historic center, to evoke its traditional charm. “We want Puerto Vallarta to reflect the memories of those who grew up here – white facades, tiled roofs, and a unified aesthetic that enhances its appeal for visitors,” he stated.
The project also involves the rehabilitation of piers in Las Ánimas, Quimixto, and Yelapa, and the construction of new docks in Mismaloya, Chimo, Tehuamixtle Bay, and Barra de Navidad.
With a total state investment of 872 million pesos, this initiative is designed to improve maritime transportation across Jalisco, linking key destinations in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo Corrientes, and even neighboring Nayarit. The Las Peñas pier will serve as a critical stopover for nautical routes connecting the northern part of Banderas Bay to Puerto Vallarta, enhancing accessibility for locals, workers, and tourists.
Governor Lemus’s vision underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable growth and regional connectivity. By revitalizing the area’s maritime infrastructure, Jalisco aims to cement Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a world-class destination while honoring its rich cultural heritage.
And I have a link to that story from The Banderas News.com, in the show notes.
Jalisco to Boost Maritime Connectivity with New Las Peñas Pier
So, I think it’s a great idea. I like the connectivity feature. I also think it’d be a great addition to the Cinco de Diciembre area. What do you think?
Send me your opinion to pvtravelshow@gmail.com.
Restaurant Le Bistro Open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
I wanted to let you all know that after a bit of a delay, Restaurant Le Bistro, the one we talked about last month, and in the introduction to the show, if you noticed, Le Bistro has finally opened it’s breakfast and lunch service. Hours for Breakfast are 10-12, Lunch noon till 5 and dinner 5 to 10 pm.
I have a copy of their menus in the show notes.
That’s Le Bistro by Grupo la Palapa, on Isla Cuale. It’s an absolutely beautiful restaurant.
International Friendship Club Home Tours
Speaking of past interviews Debbie and I took a home tour with the International Friendship Club the other day, and it was very cool. We visited 4 beautiful properties. All of them were Villas. Three of them were in Conchas Chinas, and the fourth was in Gringo Gulch. All of them were drop dead gorgeous, and I believe at least 3 of them were available as vacation rentals.
The tour costs about $50 US per person, and almost all that money goes directly to the charities the club supports, including their cleft palate program.
La Huerta Has Pickleball Courts
Debbie and I have had such a wonderful time meeting some of our listeners over the last few months. One couple, Susie and

Russ, from New York, were just a fun couple. Total foodies. I have an interview with them coming up soon. Russ and Susie, among

other things, are big enthusiasts of pickleball. So, in their honor I thought I’d go over to La Huerta BBQ in Paso Ancho, where the old El Rio BBQ used to be, riverside, along the Cuale. Up the Cuale that is. And talk with Jesus about the improvements they

made on their property during the off season, and to the guy who arranges and organizes the pickleball club that plays there in

the mornings. So let’s talk with pickle baller Al Witt, and Jesus Placencia, one of the family at La Huerta, and see what’s

happening in Paso Ancho, at La Huerta BBQ.
Listen to The Podcast
Thank you very much Jesus and Al. Like I mentioned I have links to the pickleball scheduler, plus pictures of the pickleball courts

all set up, the new bathrooms, the new stage, and more, in the show notes. And, if you haven’t been to La Huerta since they made all the improvements, you need to go. It’s just beautiful.

Now while I was at La Huerta, I ran into a friend of mine, Dwane Valentine, who just happened to be giving pickleball lessons to a young lady at La Huerta. Duane is also involved with this pickleball mania sweeping Vallarta, and he tells me he has pickleball

courts at the Port, over at Puerto Magico. And they’re opening up as we speak. So, I asked Duane if he had a few minutes to tell us about them, and what do you know, he said yes. Let’s get to Duane right now…

Listen to The Podcast
Thank you so much Duane. I have all the information for the pickleball courts at the Puerto Magico, in the show notes as well at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com.
Like I was saying Debbie and I have been having so much fun of late meeting up with some of you listeners who actually reached out to say hi. We’ve had so much fun hanging out with you all. Matt and Jodi from Canada, Jose and Cara from Atlanta who invited us up to their lovely home they are putting the finishing touches on. Wow, the view. This couple, they are both architects and they built the most beautiful home. Very nice human beings. Let’s see, Cheryl and Jim from Indiana, Gilbert and Chris from Colorado, oh, and Brian from Colorado. Laura and her husband from Austin Texas, and their kids. All super nice people. If you are coming to town, feel free to reach out and say hi! We’re retired you know.
The Story About The Rubber Tree in Zona Romantica
I stopped by the Olas Altas Farmers Market at Tile Park last Sunday and tracked down my friend Samuel Resendiz. I’ve had

Samuel on the show. Samuel is from an old time Vallarta Family. His Grandfather did a lot of building in Vallarta. And Samuel is an underwater photographer. I’ll link his episode in the show notes, but I had asked him if he knew anything about this big tree in the Zona Romantica, that I always wondered about. It’s huge, it looks ancient, and it sticks out into the street on Calle
Venustiano Carranza, just as you come out of the tunnel coming into town. It’s right near El Brujo if you know where that is. And it’s always been a mystery to me. And low and behold, Samuel knew exactly what I was talking about…let’s listen to a little Vallarta History, and trivia, with Samuel Resendiz, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Listen to The Podcast
Thank you, Samuel. That’s, as Paul Harvey used to say, if you are old enough to remember that guy, the rest of the story.

I have pictures of both of those trees, the one in Conchas Chinas and the one in Zona Romantica, in the show notes. One of these days, I’ll get Samuel’s dad to come on the podcast. He’s a real interesting guy.

Speaking about the rest of the story, next week, I’ll be giving you the blow by blow of Debbie and my move to Puerto Vallarta. How we got our temporary residency and our Mexican Tax ID numbers and opened our first Mexican bank account even. Next week. The rest of that story.
Gabino Sandoval Barrera The Pull-tab Purse Maker

Now, lucky for me, right next door to Samuel’s booth in the Saturday Market is my old friend Gabino Sandoval Barrera, the pull

tab purse maker has his very popular booth right there so while we’re at the market, let’s hear from Gabino, the Pull Tab Purse Maker, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Listen to The Podcast

Thank you very much Gabino! I have pictures of all his booth, and all his cool pull tab products in the show notes as well as a Facebook business page for those Gabino Eco purses, belts and accessories.

Restaurant Adobes in Puerto Vallarta Mexico
Finally, we go to one of my very favorite restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. It’s a family owned and run restaurant named after one of the restaurants the owner and head chef used to work at. Long gone, and resurrected in name that is and that’s Restaurant Adobes. So chef Vicente Montes, after working in many famous Vallarta restaurants opened his own restaurant, and he called it Restaurant Adobes.

The restaurant is located on I. Madero, on a very busy corner restaurant wise. Next door they have Bravos and Siam Thai, across the street there’s Martini en Fuego too, so this restaurant has some stiff competition, but I must say Debbie and I eat here at

least a couple times a month when we want a relaxing and romantic meal at a reasonable price. The inside of the restaurant is cute with cloth tablecloths and linen napkins. It’s air conditioned for maximum comfort. And the staff are really there to make

sure you have a good experience. So I asked the head waiter who is the son of Vicente Montes, Jesus, if he would sit down with me and tell us the story of his families restaurant, and about his dad who has worked at a veritable who’s who of restaurants in

Puerto Vallarta. So, let’s go right now to Francisco I Madero 259 in the Zona Romantica, and let’s have a chat with Jose de Jesus Montes Loya, at Restaurant Adobes, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Listen to The Podcast
Thank you so much Jesus. Wow, your dad worked at Le Bistro, the River Café, Café de Artistes, I mean, he has years of
knowledge. Well, you know my wife and I love this restaurant. I have pictures and links and a Google map that will take you to the front door of Restaurant Adobes in the show notes. Thanks to Jesus and his whole family.
