Nuevo Vallarta is now Nuevo Nayarit?<\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"UBihDzG5J9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/mexiconewsdaily.com\/news\/nuevo-vallarta-renamed-nuevo-nayarit\/\">Nuevo Vallarta is now Nuevo Nayarit, but not everyone is happy<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Nuevo Vallarta is now Nuevo Nayarit, but not everyone is happy&#8221; &#8212; Mexico News Daily\" src=\"https:\/\/mexiconewsdaily.com\/news\/nuevo-vallarta-renamed-nuevo-nayarit\/embed\/#?secret=Mxs2UwAINx#?secret=UBihDzG5J9\" data-secret=\"UBihDzG5J9\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Critics accused the governor of Nayarit of strong-arming local leaders<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Published on Friday, June 24, 2022<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Planning a trip to Nuevo Vallarta, the popular tourist development just north of Puerto Vallarta?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not anymore you\u2019re not.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The name of the tailored enclave \u2014 known for its luxury accommodations, golf courses, marina and long, sandy beach \u2014 was officially changed to Nuevo Nayarit in a vote this week by the local municipal council.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The new name makes sense to some, since the development is in the state of Nayarit, across the R\u00edo Ameca from Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, and is the southernmost part of the 300-kilometer stretch of coastline that for 15 years has been branded as the Riviera Nayarit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In fact, the governor of Nayarit, Miguel \u00c1ngel Navarro Quintero, has been the No. 1 proponent of the renaming since he announced it out of left field in early January. \u201cWe are no longer determined to promote a municipality in the neighboring state, but rather our own municipalities and our own state,\u201d he declared at the time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Shortly thereafter, a huge sign welcoming people to the area was changed to \u201cBienvenidos a Nuevo Nayarit.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But numerous business people, residents, property owners and members of the tourist industry and chamber of commerce are up in arms for a handful of reasons. Many, for example, like how the name Nuevo Vallarta created a marketable twinning with Puerto Vallarta.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Moreover, some accused the governor of strong-arming the mayor and members of the Bah\u00eda de Banderas municipal council into voting for the change.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The 14-member council of the municipality, which includes the newly-named Nuevo Nayarit, approved the new name at its June 21 meeting by simple majority.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That meeting turned into something of a circus, with opponents of the name change trying in vain to voice their opinions. After an hour of rigmarole and threats that the meeting would be suspended, a vote was finally taken.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The newspaper Tribuna de la Bah\u00eda reported that opponents of the Nuevo Nayarit name confronted the municipal council for \u201cnot listening to them and changing the name of Nuevo Vallarta just by raising their hands.\u201d At one point, the session was interrupted by citizens who wanted to present all of the economic and legal implications of the name change \u2014 so the council members could cast an informed vote.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nuevo Vallarta has been sold as a tourist brand alongside Puerto Vallarta for nearly four decades. Jos\u00e9 Ludwig Estrada Virgen, a longtime but now retired tourism director for Puerto Vallarta, said he regretted the name change, as it will undermine joint promotion efforts and will have repercussions for the region.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Afterward, Daniela Ram\u00edrez, a resident in the area, accused the elected officials of going against the will of the people and succumbing to \u201cpolitical whims.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf they are listening to the people, then they do not change that name,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are going to go forward with lawsuits and injunctions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The newspaper Vallarta Independiente reported that mayor of Bah\u00eda de Banderas, Mirtha Villalvazo Amaya, said she did not want to change the name when queried in January, right after the governor\u2019s\u00a0 announcement had taken everybody by surprise. She told reporters, \u201cin an annoyed tone,\u201d that his decision was made hastily and without consulting her, business people, those who promote tourism in the region and residents. However, this week she had changed her tune and said it was a good thing for Bah\u00eda, and she voted for the change at the meeting.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Milton Colmenares wrote in the Vallarta Independiente: \u201cSitting well with the governor has become a priority, even though this means trampling on the voice of the citizenry.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Council member Mar\u00eda del Carmen Arreola told the newspaper Meridiano: \u201cFor us who live in this place, it is vitally important to have our own identity. It is time to emancipate ourselves with a vision based on what the region represents in tourism, economic and visionary matters. Susana does a radio show out of the University of Guadalajara La Costa in Puerto Vallarta at their radio station Radio UDGPV, her show is called Todo Los Vozes Cuentan, or in English, that would be All the Voices Count\u2026and on her show she talks about the news of the day in Vallarta but it\u2019s a talk show and has guests from the city, government, social groups, I fact I have one of her last Facebook shows she did in the show notes where she has on the folks from SEAPAL, the water utility in Vallarta. The program is about an hour in length. She is a tough cookie, and gets to the point. I remember she made national news when she asked AMLO a question about the government keeping promises to pay people during the pandemic when he was in town, something like that..so she\u2019s a real pistol&#8230; At any rate, she was attacked\u2026here\u2019s the latest on the situation and on her condition&#8230;..<\/p>\n<h3>Mexican journalist Susana Carre\u00f1o Severely Wounded in Puerto Vallarta Knife Attack<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/udgtv.com\/radioudg\/puerto-vallarta\/todas-las-voces-cuentan\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10304 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/puertovallartatravelshow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/puertovallartatravelshow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/logo.jpg 235w, https:\/\/puertovallartatravelshow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/logo-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>July 6, 2022 1:59 PM EDT<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mexico City, July 6, 2022 \u2013 Mexican authorities should immediately and transparently investigate the stabbing of journalist Susana Carre\u00f1o, determine the motive of the attack, and take appropriate steps to guarantee her safety, the Committee to Protect Journalists said Wednesday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On July 1, near the coastal resort city of Puerto Vallarta, in the central Mexican state of Jalisco, unidentified drivers in a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee crashed into Carre\u00f1o\u2019s vehicle; two men then approached the scene on a motorcycle, forced Carre\u00f1o at gunpoint to lay down, and stabbed her repeatedly, according to news reports.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Carre\u00f1o, a reporter for Radio UDG, a broadcaster affiliated with the University of Guadalajara, underwent emergency surgery for injuries to her chest and neck, and was in stable condition as of Wednesday but was not allowed to speak due to her injuries, Radio UDG director Gabriel Torres told CPJ by phone.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe shocking and brutal attack on Susana Carre\u00f1o, less than a week after journalist Antonio de la Cruz and his daughter were killed in Tamaulipas, once again shows the Mexican authorities\u2019 utter failure to protect the country\u2019s press,\u201d said Jan-Albert Hootsen, CPJ\u2019s Mexico representative. \u201cAuthorities must protect Carre\u00f1o and her colleagues by all means necessary, immediately find the culprits of this shameless violence, and determine whether Carre\u00f1o was attacked for her work.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Carre\u00f1o and her co-worker had just entered their vehicle when the attack began, according to Torres and a news report by UGTV, Radio UDG\u2019s television affiliate, which said that the initial car crash was seemingly deliberate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The attackers used Carre\u00f1o\u2019s vehicle to escape the crime scene, and the car was found about 10 miles from the scene of the attack, that report said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Torres said the attack took place minutes after Carre\u00f1o and her co-worker, whose identity he asked CPJ to keep private for safety concerns, finished a live broadcast of Carre\u00f1o\u2019s news show \u201cAll Voices Count\u201d at Ejido Vallarta, a stretch of communal land near Puerto Vallarta. Carre\u00f1o has worked for Radio UDG for years, and recently reported on alleged corruption and illegal construction work in the area, Torres said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hours after the attack, Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro wrote on Twitter describing it as a robbery.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Torres, however, said that while the attackers did steal the journalist and her coworker\u2019s phones and car, \u201cthey went straight for [Carre\u00f1o]; this did not look like a robbery at all.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>According to that UGTV report, Jalisco state authorities later announced that they were investigating whether the attack was related to Carre\u00f1o\u2019s work, but had not commented publicly on the possible motive or the identity of the attackers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Torres told CPJ that Carre\u00f1o had not mentioned receiving any recent threats to her life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>An official with the Federal Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, which provides journalists with protective measures under the auspices of the Federal Interior Ministry, told CPJ that the office was not aware of any recent threats against Carre\u00f1o or her colleagues at Radio UDG. He added that the mechanism had contacted Carre\u00f1o in the wake of the attack and was incorporating her into a protection program. That official asked CPJ to remain anonymous, as he was not authorized to speak publicly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>CPJ repeatedly called the Jalisco state prosecutor\u2019s office for comment, but no one answered.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mexico is the deadliest country for journalists in the Western Hemisphere. According to CPJ research, at least three journalists have been murdered in direct relation to their work in 2022.
