If you remember, Guy saw how the Isla Cuale needed help after Hurricane Nora did a number on the Island last August, and put together a crew to preserve the last green space in Town. We have news and more so before we get to Kika, Ernesto, Sunny and Dr. Mitch, let\u2019s see what\u2019s happening this week in Puerto Vallarta, the 28th of December, 2022\u2026<\/p>\n<h3>Vallarta Getting Ready For The New Year Celebrations<\/h3>\n<p>The Malecon is decorated festively this Christmas with a Huge tree, life-sized camels, elephants, mangers and nativity scenes lights and all the holiday decorations. In fact, the artist who painted the big catrina calavera that won the Guinness World Record for height, Alandra Muca, also painted many of these decorations too. It\u2019s a wonderful time of the year with high season in full swing. Today, the 28<sup>th<\/sup> of December is the Mexican version of April Fools Day, Dia de los innocents, it\u2019s called so beware. Don\u2019t lend anyone any money, if it sounds impossible, you are likely being pranked. They even play tricks on you in the newspapers so take what you read with a grain of salt on the 28<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Hotel occupancy is at 90% this holiday coming up on New Year\u2019s Eve and New Year\u2019s Day celebrations. Most of the pick-pocketers hang out at the supermarkets and places like Walmart. So, you should be thinking about how you will be carrying your valuables. Your identification, your money, your credit cards, your cell phone. Will you be wearing a money belt? A cross body bag? Cargo shorts with a hundred pockets? Do you have a plan? Do you take proper care when you enter a cajero\/ATM? What do you do to keep your things safe?<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of safe, there was an incident, a shooting on December 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, on the Malecon extension in front of the Plaza Mar where the Red Onion is near the OXXO. When I first hear about the location, I thought it may be a drug dealer situation because that\u2019s a very active spot for the pipe, cigar, pot, cocaine, hooker, dealer\/salesmen. But I have inside information that it was actually a domestic dispute. The dude was stabbing at his woman with a knife and the folks at the OXXO called the cops. By the time the cops arrived the abuser had already pulled a gun out and was firing the thing indiscriminately and according to my source, the \u201cPolice challenged him and then he shot one cop in the leg, of course he became target practice for the others and went down immediately\u201d. I\u2019ll be reminding you about the Charro Championship as it approaches, but if you are going to be in town during the period of January 31<sup>st<\/sup> till the 5th of February, you may want to make plans to get out to Arena Vallarta.<\/p>\n<p>I have a link to that article from Vallartaonline in the shownotes..<\/p>\n<p>Arena Vallarta is in the flight path if you take the time l look out the window flying in. It\u2019s out past Ixtapa, Desembocada, around Colonia El Colorado on the Carreterra Las Palmas. And it\u2019s very close to Restaurant Las Cazueslas, which, by the way is a very popular roadside restaurant out that way. You gotta try it one day as well. Las Cazuelas serves great authentic Mexican food. They have some horses that children can see. And on weekends they prepare chocolate cow\u2019s milk for the kids, and traditional pajaretas for the adults. What\u2019s a pajarete? A Pajarete is a party, in a barn early in the mornings when the cows are being milked. It is also the name of the drink that they make out of fresh cow\u2019s milk, liquor, chocolate, sugar and instant coffee.. We\u2019ve heard some of our guests talk about their experiences with the stuff\u2026Personally, I\u2019ll pass. Especially after reading this article\u2026from Mexican News Daily\u2026<\/p>\n<p><em>Having killed 25 people, pajarete is known as the drink of death in Jalisco<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Susy Buchanan<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>June 12, 2020<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Having killed 25 people, pajarete known as drink of death in Jalisco<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A cup of pajarete,\u00a0<\/em><em>Bottoms up, but beware.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A drink made from fresh milk, chocolate, sugar and cane alcohol is coming to be known as the \u201cdrink of death\u201d in Jalisco, where 25 people have died and 20 more have been sickened after drinking the concoction, known as pajarete.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Health Minister Fernando Petersen Aranguren is asking residents not to consume artisanal drinks because the quality, purity and safety of cane alcohol used in their production cannot be guaranteed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Family members of Gustavo Ch\u00e1vez Anaya, who died on April 29 at age 61, say he only had one serving of the popular regional beverage before falling ill.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe felt his hands grow numb, his body heavy, and he could not see well after drinking it,\u201d said his niece, Carolina Ch\u00e1vez.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>His symptoms were typical of what occurs after drinking alcohol tainted with excessive levels of methanol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Typically used in solvents and antifreeze, methanol can metabolize to formaldehyde and formic acid in the liver and become toxic within a few hours of being ingested.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Symptoms included dizziness, blurred vision or blindness, difficulty breathing, seizures and severe abdominal pain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The pajarete tradition is popular on ranches in Jalisco, Michoac\u00e1n and Guanajuato, where many drink it in the morning for energy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Many cattle ranchers also produce it for profit, as the market for fresh milk is oversaturated and a liter of pajarete, which uses milk as an ingredient, fetches a higher price.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The president of Jalisco\u2019s Regional Livestock Union, Adalberto Velazco, estimates that hundreds of ranchers across 45 municipalities are dedicated to producing pajarete, but as deaths mount their industry may be shut down by authorities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Adulterated liquor, like the cane alcohol used in pajaretes, has been responsible for at least 189 deaths in Mexico since May 1.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Milenio (sp)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have a link to that article from Mexico News Daily in the shownotes.<\/p>\n<p>Of course I\u2019m not casting aspersions on Las Cazuelas or any of the local purveyors of pajaretes\u2026.just buyer beware.<\/p>\n<h3>Restaurant El Set is Being Shut Down for Condos<\/h3>\n<p>Have you spent any time or visited Restaurant El Set over the years\u2026Well kiss it goodbye\u2026From Vallartaenlina December 5<sup>th<\/sup>,<\/p>\n<p><em>GOODBYE, cowboy! The army-run company is also responsible for operating the Maya Train railroad and the Felipe \u00c1ngeles International Airport (AIFA).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe new airline will begin operations in a year, this is the plan for the end of next year, along with the operation of the [Maya] Train and the appraisal of the Mexicana brand,\u201d President L\u00f3pez Obrador said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The airline will lower the cost of airfare while serving cities that current routes do not frequently reach, according to the president. He added that the country\u2019s entire aviation system will be improved.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The name Mexicana comes from the former national airline that ceased operations in 2010. The airline\u2019s downfall was marked by corruption and mismanagement, leaving over 8,000 employees without jobs. President L\u00f3pez Obrador has said that the new airline, consisting of a fleet of 10 leased planes, will be staffed by these individuals.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The airline will also include the presidential plane, which the president has failed to sell. It will be used to reward airline workers and their families, he said in November.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Information about the proposed airline was first leaked by the Guacamaya hacking group, which infiltrated Sedena\u2019s internal communications and resulted in a breach of millions of emails.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The airline\u2019s viability has been questioned, as its operating costs could be between 1 billion and 1.8 billion pesos (or around US$50-90 million). Moreover, it is illegal for a company to operate an airline and an airport simultaneously, although this could possibly be circumvented by presidential decree. There is also doubt that travelers would be willing to fly with a military-run airline given the armed forces\u2019 record of fatal aviation accidents.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>President L\u00f3pez Obrador also announced that Sedena will be charged with managing the Chetumal, Palenque, and Campeche airports. VGC Board President John McKinney will continue leading the board of the combined organization, and Guy Weeks will join the board as the head of a permanent Amigos de la Isla Cuale subcommittee.\u00a0 Weeks was part of a crew of volunteers who dug the island out from beneath tons of sand left behind after flooding brought by Hurricane Nora in August 2021.\u00a0 Following the initial cleanup effort, Weeks assembled a core group of volunteers that began organizing and raising funds to restore the plants and trees that had been decimated by the flood. In cooperation with local government authorities, other non-profit groups and generous donors, the group also took on several other improvement projects including security lighting, erosion management, establishing new planter beds and building a children\u2019s playground.\u00a0 Dozens of volunteers, including VGC members, contributed sweat equity in the work to revitalize the Isla. In addition, the VGC board allocated funding to the project to purchase plants, soil, fertilizer and other supplies.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWe have been honored to support, and become friends with, the Amigos de la Isla Cuale since March 2022.
