It was then, in a very weak moment, that I proposed a podcast to help him promote his tour selling business at Vallarta Info.com. The\u00a0 very popular travel website. You can find these forums for all the cities and countries that Trip Advisor covers. Potential visitors write in questions to these local experts in order to get a feel for what to expect when they arrive at a particular destination. It\u2019s actually a pretty cool little travel tool. I\u2019ve had several of these local experts from the Puerto Vallarta Trip Advisor Forum on the podcast. Well, JR used his designation as a area expert to his advantage. \u00a0He used to invite those folks who were asking those questions on the Trip Advisor Forum to his meetups. So what did they do? \u00a0They banned him from the forum and stripped him of his local expert status. \u00a0\u00a0And it was at that moment that he sent me an email letting me know that he was ready to give the podcasting idea a try.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1452\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1452\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1452\" src=\"https:\/\/puertovallartatravelshow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/trip_advisor_logo-300x142.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"142\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trip Advisor Logo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I told him we would model it after the Trip Advisor forum and that I would interview him and talk about the most common things that come up on the forum. How to exchange money, how to take the buses and taxis. What to expect when you arrive at the Puerto Vallarta airport, when\u2019s the best time of year to visit, what\u2019s with the mosquito situation like and what to use to avoid them. Stuff like that. I ended up calling the show The Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. And what I found over the years was and still to this day is at those meet and greets, is where I\u2019ve met people who are now my closest friends. You all know who you are. He lived it on his terms. He was an Englishman in Paradise. And he left an impression on just about everyone he interacted with. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good. Nobody\u2019s perfect. But JR truly loved to meet those Puerto Vallarta visitors who would come sit with him and soak up all the news and information that he would share to his new and old friends. First timers as well as Vallarta veterans coming to his meet and greets, many of them making a yearly pilgrimage to meet up with JR. Building friendships, relationships and bonds with total strangers, now close friends, from all over the world. That\u2019s the basic Mexican healthcare system. They lacked the proper tools to see down his throat. Finally after many tries his friends stepped in and got him in to a local hospital where they stuck a scope down his throat and it was there that they found a growth on his esophagus. And they determined it was cancerous. And what would happen is it would become infected when he ate solid foods. His body was rejecting most of the solid food he was eating. So, the doctors decided not to operate at all. Which was a death sentence in reality. He would continue to waste away. JR had been living in his apartment up in El Coloso for 16 years. And I know that many of you have had the pleasure of visiting him there in his apartment and had the unusual experience of trying to find a chair that wouldn\u2019t fall apart. Most of his furniture had been hollowed out, eaten by termites. That will be followed by ash scattering near the Muelle on Playa Los Muertos right after the memorial service. Tons to eat. Not gourmet, but good. Very authentic food. Tons of locals were there with their families celebrating birthdays. It was very sweet. There was live entertainment while you ate. Dancing horses, folkloric dancers, mariachi music and singing. And the view from there is spectacular. The green mountains even a glimpse of the bay on a clear day. It dips and it\u2019s a climb up to get to the other side, but the view is breathtakingly beautiful. You see the river and the zipliners zipping below you. It\u2019s really a cool experience. I put pics in the show notes so take a look. The total cost was approximately 400 pesos per person plus transportation.<\/p>\n<p>It was a good deal. You can also go up there and have lunch or breakfast any day of the week on their regular menu. We\u2019ve done that in the past and it\u2019s much quieter. Have you been there? I like it! It\u2019s on the Carretera the highway 200 almost to Mismaloya. We got there by taking the Mismaloya Bus from Zona Romantica. You can find it on Constitution and Basillio Badillo. \u00a0I will add a map to the show notes. The price was still 10 pesos per person and not the 14 pesos I heard they hiked the bus fares up to the first of the year. I guess the change hasn\u2019t taken effect.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure to tell the bus driver you want him to stop at Playa Palmares as you get on the bus. I always wanted to stop there and wondered what it was like but was always going from Vallarta to somewhere past it or back. Boy was I missing out. Now you can just stop there and eat and drink at the restaurant, which I highly recommend. That\u2019s for those of you who don\u2019t want to get your toes sandy and wet. The sand is white and soft. The water is swimmable in certain spots as well. It kind of reminds me of Las Animas without all the beach restaurants. You will pay 100 pesos per chair to sit at one of these tables. And it\u2019s all yours for the day if you wish&#8230; The tables closest to the restaurant by the way have the advantage of being close to a pretty nice bathroom, about 10 pesos plus a snack bar. So keep that in mind. Toilet and snacks. They don\u2019t serve food or drinks there so \u00a0bring your own picnic, your own booze, smokes, and make it a day.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards we went for drinks and late lunch at Canto Palmares, and I gotta say it was really good. Delicious. Great staff and lots of fun clients to people watch too. There\u2019s a DJ spinning great Mexican tunes while you enjoy the view of the ocean and los arcos to the south, Vallarta to the north. Beautiful. \u00a0We saw whales playing right in front of the restaurant which made it even sweeter. Make sure you check out their bathroom on the top floor of the restaurant. It\u2019s a urinal with a view. I must tell you I had a very special moment there. At the Urinal. That\u2019s all I\u2019ll say about that. Give it a try. You\u2019ll see what I\u2019m talking about. I\u2019ll be doing an interview with the folks at Canto Palmares soon. I really, really like it.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, you can take the Mismaloya-Boca bus back to Vallarta. Just cross the highway and wait for it, but it will be packed, standing room only most likely. So, we took a taxi back into town both times we\u2019ve been to Playa Palmares. One taxista wanted 150 pesos and the other driver wanted 200 pesos to take us to the Zona Romantica. A fair price to pay for not having to stand on a bus all the way back to town with sand in your butt crack and all your beach stuff hanging from your arms I guarantee you. I\u2019ve spoken at length about all the cool venues from Vallarta to Bucerias where great local bands rotate through all these clubs. It\u2019s mostly classic rock and current rock and roll tunes. Over the years we\u2019ve seen some country music bands sneaking in, and making their rounds in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. I judge a good country band by how much my wife likes them. She\u2019s the country western expert in my life and she really liked Duncan Shadrack and The Duncan Shadrack Band.<\/p>\n<p>They have a stand-up bass and a killer fiddle player, steady drummer and Duncan, Duncan is a real showman on the acoustic guitar. Kinda reminds my wife of the Parrot Head guy, Jimmy Buffett. And I agree with her. I really like him and you will too.
