This was the act that marked the beginning the Mexican War of Independence. in the early morning of September 16, 1810. According to tradition, it consisted of the call that Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla , accompanied by Ignacio Allende and Juan Aldama , made to his parishioners so that they would rise up in arms against New Spain in the early morning of September 16, 1810, for which he rang one of the bells of the Parish of the Town of Dolores, today named after him Dolores Hidalgo, in the state of Guanajuato.

In Puerto Vallarta the grito is celebrated on the night of the 15th with civic ceremonies, live music, and the reenactment of Miguel Hidalgo’s historic call for independence in 1810, given by the mayor of the city from the balcony on the second floor of City Hall, seen and heard over loud speakers and on a big screen projected to the throngs of people below in the Plaza de Armas and along the Malecon.

The speech is followed by the singing of the national anthem and a huge firework salute. It’s quite a celebration here in Puerto Vallarta.

Then the next day September 16 marks Independence Day, (Día de la Independencia): The official national holiday commemorating the start of the war of independence from New Spain which lasted from September 16th, 1810 until August 24, 1821, when the Treaty of Córdoba was signed by Spanish Viceroy Juan O’Donojú, officially recognizing Mexican independence. The 16th features parades and military marches.

Then after a bit of a rest, 3 days later on September 27 is (Consumación de la Independencia) which marks the formal end of the that 10 year Mexican War of Independence in 1821.

And that is what’s coming up this month in Mexico and in Vallarta. And when we got to Juntos de los Veranos, which is just a few kilometers shy of the Botanical Garden, I looked out of the window and saw a Guarda National checkpoint set up there. They stopped the bus and on walked a couple of uniformed INM immigration agents. They scanned the bus riders and walked right to the white guys in the back of the bus. Me and Debbie were the only white guys by the way, and the agent asks us for our ID’s. I was a little startled and hoping we had what they were looking for , so we both pulled out our Temporary Residency cards which we always carry with us. Not a copy, the real thing. I’ve been told by some folks who live here full time that they just carry a copy of their Residency cards because it’s hard to replace if you lose it, but according to Kim Bix from Green-go-4 Gringo, it’s very easy to replace. She told us she has all our files and can help us get a new one toot sweet, so we carry the hard copy with us always.

Green-go-4 Gringo Immigration Services for Permanent and Temporary Resident Cards, CURP and Changes of Address in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

So the INM guy looks at my card and says Barry Keesler, Then glances at Debbies, and, looking a bit disappointed, he moved on, just checking one other suspicious looking dude who didn’t have ID, but was Mexican as it turned out. And having nothing to show for their time, they climbed down from the bus and waved us through. Talk about being profiled.

So, this is a great time to remind everyone to carry their ID with them. I believe that they now require foreigners to carry their passports and not black and white copies as was accepted before.

Times they are a changing.

According to the Google, you DO need to carry your passport in Mexico.

Foreign visitors are legally required to carry their passport and entry proof at all times while in Mexico.

Mexican law states that foreigners must carry their valid passport and official entry permit.

Immigration officials can request these documents at any time during checkpoints or travel within the interior of the country.

Failing to show your documents when asked can result in legal detention by immigration authorities.

Some travel advisory sources note a risk of document theft if passports are carried loosely in public areas.

Many travelers choose to leave the physical passport locked in a secure hotel safe and carry a clear color photocopy or digital photo of the passport and entry stamp instead, though this does not technically satisfy the strict legal requirement to carry the original.

So there it is in all it’s AI Google-ness.

Keep safe. Carry proper ID. You’ve been pre-warned.

And feel free to add your two cents worth in an email to me at pvtravelshow@gmail.com, and I might just share it with everyone. What kind of ID do you carry with you in Mexico? Have you ever been detained for not having the proper ID in Mexico?

But hey, can you imagine taking that Botanical Garden Bus, and hoping to spend a lovely day at the Garden or a memorial service in Mato, and then not have your proper ID and have to take a ride with the INM agent to jail? No Bueno. No Bueno. Carry your Passport. I’ll talk about how we carry our belongings next week.

What Is Different About The Food in Mexico

Speaking of sending me an email, it seems my dissatisfaction with the butter in Mexico has touched a nerve. It really is bad. And listener and friend of ours Eric from Minni-so-cold writes….

You mentioned a newsletter in your most recent podcast. Please sign me up!

By the way, you can sign up for the newsletter too, just send me an email to pvtravelshow@gmail.com and I’ll get you on the list too. Eric writes….

You also mentioned butter. I never thought much about butter (despite being from Wisconsin) but listened to a Wirecutter podcast about butter a couple of years ago. The expert said that the brand isn’t nearly as important as how it is made. She claimed that butter from grass fed cows was noticeably better. I was skeptical, but she was correct.

Both Costco and LaComer sell Kerrygold, which is excellent. I wish it were a Wisconsin butter, but it is from Ireland.

I mainly use the butter for my breakfast sandwich, which I make at least twice a week both in Wisconsin and in PV. Then Eric gives me the recipe….and thank you for that Eric. We’ll see you and Amy here in a few months, amigo. And thanks for the email.

So, what else bothers you, Barry? What else do you have trouble getting your hands on in Mexico?

Well, besides bad unsalted butter, except for Kerrygold Irish grass-fed imported butter, which I haven’t tasted yet. Also unsalted I might add. Thank you for the explanation, Eric. And then there’s the Costco Kirkland brand butter which I do use, but is also unfortunately unsalted, so I solve that with a saltshaker.

I actually went to Costco the other day determined to buy the Kerrygold, but it was 350 pesos for what looked like half of what the Kirkland butter was, and I just couldn’t do it. Not this time anyway. Besides, I don’t really use that much butter anyway when I’m cooking. We don’t even have an oven in our apartment, so no baking goes at our house.

But enough with the butter. What else can’t I get you might ask? Well, believe it or not, mayonnaise here has lime flavor added to it. Look at all the labels on the mayonnaise jars and containers, because Mexicans love their mayonnaise and use a ton of it, and on all the labels you will see a picture of a lime. You have to look high and low for plain original mayonnaise. What else…Well, while on the topic of lime flavor, it’s added to everything here, not just mayo. Fritos corn chips are either lime flavored or covered in that torch red chili powder or bar-b-q powder. You can’t find just regular Fritos. It’s weird. I’m weird. I do love my Fritos.

Candy bars are smaller here. My Snickers and Milky Way bars are thinner and shorter here. Very unsatisfying.

Pickle slices are hard to find. I’ve found some at Walmart, but they hide them. At Costco you can buy a huge jar of them, but who has room for that?

And then the spice rack. Powdered spices get all caked up here. The air is so humid, so you need those food grade silicone packs to help keep spices dry. You also need to watch your spice jars for bugs hatching in them, there’s that. And when I buy dried pasta and rice, I always check the packages closely to see if there’s any little bugs crawling or things that look like bug eggs in them because sometimes there are.

And when I do buy dried pasta or rice I throw all the packages into the fridge when I get home from the store to keep those bugs from hatching and growing after you get home. Expiration dates mean nothing on milk and cream. I think it has to do with delivery services and refrigeration. But be ready for it and smell your dairy before adding it to your coffee or cereal just in case.

That’s all I can think of right now. Stay tuned for more complaints from an old guy in Mexico. More to follow. And get off my tile floor. I have no lawn.

As I noted earlier when we were picked out of a crowded bus to El Tuito, we’re white. Slightly browned. We are working on our tans almost daily, but we’ll never be real brown people. So, yeah, we get profiled regularly, even when we go out to eat, and I kind of understand why. Personally, I’m a hot spice-acholic. The hotter the better. But there are many of you out there who don’t like to have their mouths on fire. It’s all a mater of taste, right?

And so, whenever we sit at just about any restaurant here to order, when the server brings out the food, they make it a point to actually point out the hot spicy ones, just to make sure there isn’t a heat problem at table 4 if you know what I mean. Totally understandable.

However, when one orders a pizza in Mexico, if you are white, if you’re a huero, or have that north of the border look on ya, the server brings a shaker of red pepper flakes and a shaker of powdered parmesan cheese to your table for your pizza. But if you are Mexican, the server brings you that same shaker of red pepper flakes and that shaker of powdered parmesan cheese, if you look Mexican, on top of that they also bring you a bottle of catsup, mustard, a bottle of Valentino Hot Sauce, a bottle Worcestershire sauce, known here as Salsa Inglesa, as well as a couple other bottles of hot sauce. They schlep all those bottles to the table if you are Mexican. No questions asked.

And here I go again, that cranky old white guy in Mexico. Hey you whippersnapper, get off my lawn. But yeah, profiled at the pizza parlor.

I Hate Cilantro

Speaking about getting off my lawn, I’m one of those people who dislikes cilantro. I really dislike it. Now it’s not too bad if the cook sneaks in a leaf or two, to a dish. I don’t even mind too much if I find a little of it in my salsas or guacamole, but here in the land of Montezuma, chefs add that nasty green condiment by the handful. It looks like someone emptied the lawnmower grass catcher into your taco.

So, when I go out to eat, when I’m ordering I always ask if a dish has cilantro in it, and if it does, I tell them sin cilantro. If they say it doesn’t, then I make sure I tell them in Spanish, muy bien. Porque no quiero cilantro. Very good, because I don’t like cilantro, right? I say that , just to be sure they understand. If I don’t, they just might add a handful of it to my dish thinking I asked about cilantro because I wanted some. Then I occasionally get a waiter or waitress that must think they hear me say, when I say sin cilantro, which translates to without cilantro, they must be hearing me say Si, cilantro, which means yes, cilantro, and the chef naturally throws a handful of that crap in. uggg

Look, it’s not easy hating cilantro in Mexico.

And I know I’m not alone in my aversion to cilantro. And I bet there are a few of you out there who can’t stand the stuff either.

And according to the AI Google, a specific genetic variation makes cilantro taste like soap, dirt, or bugs. The Soap Gene causes a variation in the OR6A2 gene on chromosome 11, of course it does, and affects certain people who happen to be very sensitive to Seriouseats which are aromatic chemicals called aldehydes.

Aldehydes give cilantro its fresh scent, but they are also used in soaps, lotions, and bug secretions.

And they say that people with this gene perceive high levels of aldehydes as sharp, metallic, soapy, or chemical rather than citrusy, and an alarm goes off in their brain telling them Hey, you’re eating soap there sport. Researchers say that roughly 4% to 21% of people on the planet experience this strong aversion to cilantro.

I guess I’m special. So that’s another little dietary issue. I’m sure I’ll think of more, but you’ll have to wait for those.

Are We Looking to Buy a Home in Puerto Vallarta?

I received an email from listener Derrick who was hoping I’d talk more about our search for a home to buy in Puerto Vallarta.

And here’s where the house hunt stands. We still look at homes and condos that come on the market every day. We have a realtor who sends us listings as they come on the market, a real estate search with our specific parameters. Price, location, bedrooms and bathrooms and so forth.

We are on a yearly lease in the apartment we rent currently, and through the daily emails from our realtor we’ve found a few very good possibilities. He’ll take us for a tour when we find a good prospect, but to be honest, we are so comfortable renting and not having to do work on a home. We havent seen the inside of a Home Depot for a long time, and that’s just fine.

Anything comes up I just send a WhastApp message to the landlord and the maintenance man comes and takes care of it. It’s pretty nice, especially having been a homeowner for over 40 years. Not to mention the exchange rate peso to dollar is not favorable right now. Sitting at around 17 pesos to the US dollar it’s just not time to pull the trigger on a property right now.

I’m planning another open microphone podcast meetup for Thursday, September 17th, about a week from today, at El Granero Gastropub again from 3-5 PM during their happy hour. Craft brew for just 45 pesos a pint, great food and air conditioning. It’s the day after independence day and we need to continue the party. Come share your Puerto Vallarta stories. If you have a business or a charity or a tour company you want to share with my listeners, come spill the beans. We don’t bite. I get some of the best interviews at these meet-ups as you will soon hear, from surprise visitors and my listeners who love to join in the fun. Be that guy or gal, come to the meet-up this coming Thursday, September 17th at El Granero Gastropub at Francisco I Madero 333 in Zona Romantica. 3-5. See you there.

Open Microphone Meetup At El Granero

The Toilet Paper Drive was a great success

If you recall last time we talked, I had Kim and Dale, our do-gooders extraordinaire here in Vallarta who organized a TP drive for elementary schools here in town for International Toilet Paper Day, on the show, and they came to our last meetup at El Granero to tell us about it.

And in my last episode of the podcast I said I was saving two interviews I did at that open microphone meetup for this coming episode, and we’ll get to them soon, but Dale wrote to let me know how their event went.
