Listen to The Podcast

Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico.

El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club

That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta’s Oldest Restaurant on the famous Los Muertos Beach, and The El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club right next door so you can enjoy that fantastic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors, or during the day in its grand splendor for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with our toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so, Puerto Vallarta my friends.

This week we are going to be talking about the all important meal, the brunch. I’m going to give you some of my favorites, and also some of the favorites from listeners and contributor. I’m also going to take you to the Naval Museum and more but before we get to all that let’s see what’s happening this week in Puerto Vallarta the 5th of June, 2019.

Puerto Vallarta Turns 101

Puerto Vallarta celebrated her 101st birthday as a municipality on May the 31st with a concert on the

Javier Nino

Malecon, many celebrations and proclamations and commemorative awards given to some of Vallarta’s notable personalities, one of whom was our friend Javier Nino. Pintor Javier Nino was awarded a medal for his contributions to this lovely city. So well deserved and a friend of the show for sure so congratulations Javier.

Restaurant week continues till the 10th of June here in Vallarta, so you have a few more days to pig out at your favorite restaurant at bargain prices. So don’t miss out if you are in town or coming to town.

The Grill Kings Festival June 15th and 16th on Cuale Island

The Grill Kings Festival PV

Our buddy Edgar Rivas who seems to be dreaming up all these festivals has a new project; he’s got grilling on his mind. He came to the Meet and Greet we had at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse, and told me about his new event and asked to share it with all of you, so, from the rooftop at Kelly’s Pour Favor, let’s get to our friend Edgar Rivas, and see what he has planned.

Edgar Cisneros

Okay, Save the dates June 15th, my birthday so you can’t forget, and June the 16th  .  The Grill Kings Festival on Cuale Island where the cultural center is. Edgar is tempting the rain gods, I mean, the 15th is usually the start of the rainy season in Vallarta, so let’s hope the coals won’t get doused by the first gully washer of the year.

Although it’s been pretty gloomy lately. Not a lot of rain, just lots of clouds and very little sunshine.

The Naval Museum in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

The Naval Museum in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

June the 3rd was Navy Day in Puerto Vallarta with all sorts of boats on the bay. A Navy cruiser had a mock battle with the Margalante, the Pirate ship, and all sorts of private vessels. So, I thought as long as

it’s Navy week, why not visit the Navel Museo this week.

The Naval Museum in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

I have walked past this place hundreds of times haven’t you?

It’s right next to the Amphitheater where the arches are. It’s the very large two story building next to Dominos Pizza. On the corner of Zaragoza and the Malecon.

A quick look at the history of the building shows that in 2006, the Mexican Navy opened the Naval History Museum.  The Colonial-style building next to Los Arcos on the Malecon was formerly the Port Authority office, the Navy Hospital, and later the Navy Headquarters.

The Naval Museum in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

In 2016, the museo was renovated again and let me tell you, it’s a very cool place. A real surprise and a great way to learn a little about Mexican History through the interactive displays in English and in Spanish, artifacts like uniforms, weapons, furniture and navigational tools. Beautifully displayed. Models, and so forth. Let’s visit with Seaman Celis, and hear what he has to say about the Museum.

Thank you, Sailor!

Now a pro tip, on Wednesdays, entry to the Museo is free, but come on guys, 45 pesos is like $2.50.

Inside The Naval Museum in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

The place is air-conditioned as well as beautiful inside. Downstairs you get the navel history from the Aztec times, Spanish, French, Entanglements with the US, Revolutions and all the rich history of Mexico.

Inside The Naval Museum in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Then upstairs more, plus along with the many audio visual displays for each period, there’s this cool 5 screen navigation simulator that allows you to pilot a big ship through docking and other sailing techniques. I was there almost by myself and I had a ball using the simulator.

Cafeteria at The Naval Museo

Then, if you want, they have a café and gift shop. The whole tour takes less than an hour, but you can take as long as you want. It’s a great place to cool off, and what a surprise! I have lots of pictures of the place in the show notes, so next time you are in Vallarta, check out the Museo. It’s totally worth it.

Environmental Disaster Looms as Builders Rush To Build a Hydro Electric Dam on the Rio Horcones

Now I’m not going to have time this week to adequately explain the situation right at this moment in

Rio Horcones Without Limits

Boca de Tomatlan, but next week I’m going to dedicate a big part of the show to the disaster that’s happening right now in Boca. They have begun to dynamite the area near Chico’s Paradise in preparation for the building a hydroelectric dam on the Rio Horcones. This is as far as I’m concerned, an ecological

Rio Horcones Without Limits

disaster and an economic threat to the people downstream from this dam. I’m so mad about this folks. But I don’t have the time to dedicate to the subject this week. Next week, we’ll have a close look at the situation as well as some examples of hydroelectric gone bad.

The Best Brunches in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Let’s get on with the topic of this show, The Brunch in Puerto Vallarta.

Now, this topic was spurred on by my buddy Dwight. He writes…

Hi Barry!

Thanks for the recent podcast.  You said you love emails, and that you welcome ideas for future topics.  I have an idea.

What about Sunday Brunch?  I realized after my last trip that I have never had a single Sunday Brunch in Puerto Vallarta.  Not a single mimosa or eggs Benedict!  I know they exist, but I don’t know where to start.  Can you help?

You could even have different categories, such as:  “Best value”, or “Best location”.  Anyways just an idea.  Next time I am down there (May) I will definitely be searching for a great Sunday Brunch!

Cheers,

-Dwight

So, what is a Brunch? Having grown up and had my formative years in the 70’s and 80’s, I always thought brunch was a meal you took a one night stand to, after the fact to get to know her better, right? No? Well according to Webster’s, Brunch. Brunch is a combination of lunch and breakfast eaten usually during the late morning to early afternoon, generally served from 11 am, and regularly has some form of alcoholic drink (most usually champagne or a cocktail) served with it.

Let me read from this article I found in Mashed.com

The very word “brunch,” a portmanteau of the words breakfast and lunch, was reportedly first used in print in 1895 by British writer Guy Beringer. Beringer, a writer for Hunter’s Weekly, wrote an article entitled “Brunch: A Plea,” which made the case for a Sunday meal that was lighter than the typically heavy, traditional Sunday supper. ”Brunch is cheerful, sociable and inciting,” Beringer implored. ”It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.” The popular periodical Punch picked up his article in 1896, and the idea began to spread, reaching American shores by the 1920s.

Food historians aren’t in complete agreement on what the exact spread would have looked like at an old-timey brunch. Many believe the first brunches to have been England’s hunt breakfasts, which were a feast of meats hunted that day, along with eggs, stews, fruits and sweets. Others believe it was the Catholics who first enjoyed a late-morning brunch, a result of their early-morning pre-church fasting.

Brunch in the 1920s was a meal for the upscale crowd, a crowd who could get away with day-drinking with gusto (not to mention blatant disregard of Prohibition). Cookbooks of the 1930s recommended a brunch hostess make alcohol available for her male guests, but avoid imbibing herself, suggesting recipes for “mocktails” like tomato and clam juice. It wasn’t until the early 1950s that day-drinking’s stigma diminished within the middle class, with post-World War II families now possibly including working women who were looking for a weekend respite from the work week.

The Bloody Mary cocktail, which may or may not have been named for Mary, Queen of Scots, was invented in France, but spiced up for American tastes at New York City’s King Cole Bar. The Bloody Mary was a likely choice for a brunch drink, due to its “hair of the dog” status as a hangover remedy, and its similarity to the non-alcoholic tomato juice cocktails that were both widely served as appetizers in restaurants, and renowned as healthful elixirs.

The 1980s ushered in a brunch culture that most influenced the brunches we enjoy today. The age of conspicuous consumption saw the introduction of lavish brunch buffets, harkening back to its American origins as a meal for the wealthy upper class. Today, brunch may owe its prominence in pop culture to the ladies of Sex and City, making it no surprise that Food & Wine magazine named New York City the best brunch city in the United States. Eggs Benedict, perhaps the most famous of brunch dishes, was invented in NYC, with the city’s brunch menus also frequently featuring local favorites, like Nova lox and smoked sturgeon.

I have a few favorites, and I asked some of my Trip Advisor buddies what their favorite brunch places are and so here goes.

First, my favorite places to eat brunch in Puerto Vallarta

The 19 Best Brunches in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Listen to The Podcast

Mi Café, Puerto Vallarta

I love Mi Café, My favorite plate is the French Toast there. The bread is like a cinnamon roll it’s so sweet, you hardly need syrup, but use the syrup anyway. They make it with sliced strawberries, pecans, fresh fruit and bacon. Just delightful. They have all sorts of breakfast treats, but that’s my favorite. Adalberto the owner grew up in the restaurant business. His Uncle is Alberto Perez, from La Palapa. The restaurant is up in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood. It’s a place I never miss. And yes, they have a full bar at Mi Café.

Google Map: https://goo.gl/maps/YqStue3VM6poETh2A

La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta

La Palapa Puerto Vallarta

La Palapa is another great place for brunch. They are usually thought of as a very pricey restaurant, but you can get a lovely breakfast or brunch there for under $10 US. I always order the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict. Instead of the English muffin, it’s a lovely, delicate crab cake. And oh my goodness. I love that dish. Feet in the sand or in the restaurant. The service and the atmosphere can’t be beat. Top notch.

The Serrano’s Meat House, Puerto Vallarta

The Serrano’s Meat House, on the Southside is a wonderful spot to eat brunch. Right alongside Parque de Los Azulejos, you eat sidewalk style here with all the people watching opportunities you could ask for. The service is great, and if you like chilaquiles, they make the best. Sure the Chilliquellas con Pollo, with chicken is good, but this is a steak house and I order mine with skirt steak. Oh, my goodness. That with a mimosa will make your day. Yes, they have a full bar at Serranos Meat House.

Fredy’s Tucan, Puerto Vallarta

Fredy’s Tucan, Puerto Vallarta, México

I know that this sounds like everyone else out there, but I love Fredy’s Tucan. When I go to Fredy’s I go boring pancakes, the grand slam. You can’t go wrong with the wonderful service, the fresh baked pastry served when you sit down, and the extensive menu with favorites for the Mexicans and North of the border folks too. Fredy Garcia will be at the door to greet you. An all time favorite of mine. It’s economical and they have a full bar which qualifies them for the brunch department.

Memo’s Pancake House

A mention of Fredy’s Tucan can’t stand without a mention of Memo’s Pancake House. Memos is a beautiful space, Lots of tables, just up the street from Fredy’s on Basillio Badillo. Plants, trees, and greenery with high ceilings creating a very pleasant area. The omnipresent translucent corrugated plastic roof, filters the light in.  The space is beautiful, not as refined as Fredy’s, not as modern inside. Not even the well-polished machine that is Fredy’s, but Memos Pancake House is good brunch and breakfast fare for sure. Legend has it that Memo was running Fredy’s way back in the day when it was The Tucan. It was indeed the best breakfast in Vallarta. Then, one day, family moved in, and Memo had to move out and was out of a job. So, Memo moved up the street, and has been doing great breakfasts in Vallarta for about 30 years. Also a full bar makes this brunch certified.

Co-Exist Bistro, Puerto Vallarta

I love Coexist Bistro. It’s in the Hotel Rio Malecon. I pass on the regular dining room and go to the bar area where you can watch surfing movies and enjoy a relaxing meal in a lovely setting almost poolside. They make crepes, omelets, pancakes, but the item order here are the Motulenos. It’s a Yucatan dish with eggs and ham, Gouda cheese, Black refried beans all on a tortilla with avocado, tomato salsa and fried plantain on the side. It’s so, so good! It’s always a place I try to get to. They used to have a picture in the dining room of a monk on fire. It’s been replaced by a nice mural. Someone must have gotten the memo that a Monk in emulation, fully aflame was not appetizing. It was disgusting. Good on them for painting that over. Co-Exist has a lovely bar and you know what that means, It rates for brunch you alcoholics.

Cuates y Cuetes, Puerto Vallarta

And I just love to have breakfast at Cuates y Cuetes, right on the beach. I love their chilliquellas verdes con pollo. I ask them to make it extra spicy for me and they always try to get me. They think they can make it too hot and spicy for me, but they can’t. I ask them is they are trying to tickle me. The have the booze, the webcam and the great view of the Los Muertos Pier. I love Cuates y Cuetes.

Okay, those are my favorites, now some of yours…. Let’s start with the Buffets, shall we?

You can usually get buffet style breakfasts at most of the hotels and resorts, but they really don’t rate. In fact, I had a buffet brunch at the Los Arcos Hotel, El Pueblito. It was really bad. Just bad and expensive too. Let’s get to my favorites and yours too…

The Buffet Style Brunches in order of most votes.

The number one was the…

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center

Barry and Dwight

So listener Dwight and I went together to see what all the fuss was about at the Sheraton. That’s right, the very same Dwight who wrote me the email that spurred on this episode met me at the Sheraton for Sunday Brunch. They gave us the local discount, we must have fit in I suppose.

The Sheraton has a huge international buffet, tons of food with free-flowing champagne and mimosas, a wonderful Mariachi Group, Joya de Mexico and to top it off, the use of the pool area the whole afternoon. It’s perfect for those of us who have no pool at our not so fancy Airbnb. some say reservations, some say not. It’s for Sunday brunch only I believe. The cost of that brunch is $500 Pesos, about $25 US. You have views of the pool, the ocean, the food, the music. Let’s listen to The Mariachi’s Joya de Mexico, and get a sample of what they sound like….It’s pretty sweet. Bring your swimming gear.

The Selection at The Sheraton Brunch in Puerto Vallarta

Hacienda San Angel and Casa Kimberly

Coming in second and third in the buffet style brunch categories are the Hacienda San Angel and the Iguana at Casa Kimberly. Both have serving stations set up serving Prime Rib, eggs Benedict, tamales, omelets, pollo, beautiful desserts, complementary Bloody Mary’s, very nice Plus the spaces and views are beautiful. Views of the church, and the red tile rooftops and the Bahia de Banderas. They have a roaming violinist too. That brunch is also 495 or 500 pesos. It’s also seasonal, so right nowm you can’t have brunch till high season. Reservations are a must, months in advance sometimes, and I suggest if you want to eat there, call, don’t make an online reservation.

La Playita at The Lindo Mar

La Playita at the Lindo Mar Resort is a big favorite among buffet goers. The biggest draw here is the incredible view. Beachfront with one on the nicest beaches as far as beauty right in front of you. It’s your typical Mexican buffet brunch, $215 pesos both Saturday and Sunday. Call for reservations too, just to be safe.

Google Map Link: https://goo.gl/maps/5nF9jT8D9bjgXCwz6

The River Café

The River Café is on The Isla Cuale, the Cuale Island, and it’s a beautiful restaurant. They have a buffet style breakfast as well as off menu too. They serve Mexican and American dishes. The setting is lovely, riverside on the Cuale Island. Under 300 pesos. Full bar of course, and It’s good.

Brunch at Canopy River

The Canopy River Buffet Brunch is by far my very favorite brunches in Vallarta. Saturday or Sunday, it’s a huge Mexican Brunch with Mariachis, and a view that never stops. It’s way up in the mountains above Vallarta, and it’s spectacular. You can get a lift up there, arrange it through The Canopy river folks. They have transportation from town up there. And while you are up there, you can walk off all that food with a stroll across the Jorullo Bridge. The worlds longest wooden suspension bridge. It’s breathtaking. Brunch Cost 200 pesos. If you avoid the booze, it can be a very economical experience. They do have a full bar and mimosas too.

Daiquiri Dicks, Puerto Vallarta

Daiquiri Dicks everyone who emailed me says they loves their eggs Benedict. They like the location, They like that you can choose to eat inside, on the patio or on the beach. They love the service and of course, the bar works pretty well there. You can stay and lounge out front as long as you keep eating and drinking. Some people never leave.

Coco’s Kitchen, Puerto Vallarta

Coco’s Kitchen is a big favorite of many of my guests and I really like it too. Coco’s is in the Romantic Zone on Púlpito 122. The space is beautiful. Very big and bright with trees and greenery growing all around. It’s has a truly romantic feeling. At night, Coco’s is so beautiful with the mini lights in the trees, so nice. Coco’s has a full breakfast menu, some of the favorites here are the Chilaquiles Verdes con pollo, they have a French toast stuffed with cream cheese. They have a great full bar, and for brunch, Coco’s needs to be included.

Mr. Cream Pancakes and Waffles

Mr. Cream is in Marina Vallarta, and it’s by far the hands-down favorite for breakfasts and as a result, on our brunch fest. All the classic Breakfast selections both Mexican and international, but this place is known for their wonderful pancakes and waffles. Large portions, different varieties and takes on your all-time favorite breakfast, the pancake. Mr. Cream is open daily from 8 in the morning till 2 in the afternoon. It’s all about the breakfast here. Oh and you can get the booze here too!

Los Alcatraces de Vallarta

This place is in Fluvial Vallarta, across the street from Costco, and it was recommended by our friend Robina Oliver from The Sirena Reina Bathing Suits. They have the big breakfast and lunch. They are open for dinner too, but it’s good, a different neighborhood to visit, and it’s got da booze. And if Robina says it’s good, it must be good.

Restaurant Café Lukumbé

I was turned on to Lukumbe by Nacho, Anastacio Vargas, the artist on the Malecon. This is a really cool place. Mostly locals here. If you have kids, young kids and want to try something totally different, head to Lukumbe. Located on Av. Los Tules 449Colonia Jardines Vallarta, this two-story restaurant and Café is made for you. A play area for the little ones and a lovely open air restaurant. They make their own baked goods on premises. They have all the breakfast favorites both Mexican and American. Lunch of course sandwiches, burgers, steaks and salads. Booze too. It’s local flavor, nice surroundings and just something different. They are open from 8 in the morning till 10:30 in the evening most days. 7 days a week.

Google Map Link: https://goo.gl/maps/BouF68cW1cptYefu7

I have two more to add that I discovered the last trip down and they need mention as well.

Both are the buffet style Brunches and the first one is…

De Cantaro Mezcal Bar and Grill

De Cantaro, It’s on Bassillio Badillo across from Joe Jacks and next door to Pollo’s  It’s about a year old, and the space is beautiful. They have a lovely outdoor space and an air-conditioned restaurant too. A wood fired oven. They have a buffet Sunday brunch and it’s reasonable and the space is like I said lovely. It’s owned by the same people who own Vallarta Factory, the cigar and chocolate and coffee place on the corner, just as the buses heading north cross the old bridge and head down Libertad towards the Malecon, that place, and they also own Swell Beach Club. A very nice place De Cantaro, and I have an interview coming u[ with Pancho at Vallarta Factory soon. So yes, De Cantaro for brunch.

Information for De Cantaro

Mango’s Beach Club

And the last one I found was in Cinco de Diciembre, on Camerones Beach, and that was Mango’s Beach Club. They have a very nice medium sized buffet style brunch, it’s right on the beach, or inside or out on a patio. Very lovely setting. Very attentive service. And you are on Camerones Beach. I love the view looking down towards the Inglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe from Camerones beach. It’s lovely. Especially In the morning.

So that wraps up my and your picks for what turns out to be 19 brunches in Paradise. And Look, I know there’s more. And I’m sure I’ve missed some of your favorites. And if I have, let me know and tell me about it or them, and I’ll add it to my list.

Contact Information For Mango’s Beach Club

But these should keep you busy for a couple Sundays and Saturdays should you wake up with a complete stranger one morning, or someone you love, Here’s to the brunch!
