Listener Emails

I got several emails this week. This one is from listener and recent contributor to the show James. James is the guy who lives like 50 feet from Mi Café….James….I hate you James. No..really, just enormously jealous.

Getting to San Sebastian De Oeste From Vallarta by Bus

James sends me this email about a recent bus ride he took….it reads…

Hola Barry!

After listening to your podcast on your San Sebastian trip, I decided to try to do a day trip there by bus.  I’m a sucker for a challenge!

I live by Mi Cafe in Old Town and walked to the tunnel bus stop at 8:10AM and took the 10 peso bus to Versalles and found the ATM Red Line terminal.  It cost 100 pesos one way to La Estancia.  The bus was older, but had cushioned seats and air conditioning.  It was a Saturday morning and the 9AM bus was full.  Some people who got on later, beyond the airport, had to stand for more than an hour.  The total time to La Estancia was 1 hr and 45 minutes.  I hooked up with a few friendly Mexicans and shared a taxi to San Sebastian.  It cost me 50 pesos and I was in San Sebastian at 11:15AM.  I walked the town, shopped, saw the sights and ate lunch at Montebello.  Walter was there and we talked about your interview with him and about Italy, in that I have done business in Bologna for many years.  He is from Rimini, which is not far from Bologna.  I enjoyed his food and wine he treated me and a few tourists there, with his home-made limoncello.  It was really good, and he sells it for 250 pesos a bottle (wine bottle size).

Jame’s Michelada

In total, I spent 6 1/2 hours in San Sebastian, which is more than enough, unless you want to rent RVs and visit La Bufa.  The last bus from La Estancia to Vallarta is at 6:45-7PM, and at about 5PM I went to the Micheladas place in the square.  I had a great michelada (see pic), even better that the one you get at Corona Micheladas off Highway 200 in Amapas.  I also had some of their home-made raicilla.  About 4 ounces that kicked my butt!  The owner told me that having 4 of these would cause me to fall down and not move for a day!  There is a raicilla festival in San Sebastian this coming Fri/Sat.

No problem getting a cab back to La Estancia.  I just asked the waitress and there were several guys in the square that were ready to taxi me there for 120 pesos (no sharing was possible this time).  I got to La Estancia at 6:15PM and they were setting up the main town hall for Saturday night cock fights!  I checked it out, saw the birds get weighed and saw all the townspeople,

Rooster in a Box

dressed in their very best (men, women and children).  Interestingly, I noticed there was a taco stand selling udder tacos outside the cockfights. Unfortunately, the bus came before the fights

Cock Fighting Arena

started, but it was quite a sight (see pics).  Anyway, after another 100 pesos to the bus driver, I got back to Vallarta by 8:45PM and took the city bus back to Old Town by 9:10PM.  So, the whole day was 13 hours and a blast, and the total travel cost was 390 pesos round trip from my place.

Ciao!

James

So, wow, thank you James. It’s good to know that you can indeed do San Sebastian by bus, have plenty of time to eat, see the sights and return to Vallarta with plenty of time to watch the fireworks from the Malecon being shot off the Margalante.

390 pesos in today’s dollars is $20 US for travel. Not bad at all!!

Now it takes longer, but the part of this adventure James took, was being with la gente.

I have James’s step by step description and instructions in the shownotes so go there and take the bus to San Sebastian next time.

And thanks James…Now I owe you a beer and lunch too.

Correction For Skip and Gary’s Restaurant Guide

Last week I read an email from Minnesota Skip who told us about what a great deal and recourse Gary Beck’s Puerto Vallarta Restaurant Guide was.. well I didn’t see this other email he sent me so I think I better correct the record here…From Skip….

Barry,

I sent you some information yesterday about the Abuelos and Gary Beck. I was inaccurate with my comments about Gary in listing Gary’s favorites. There are 18 different categories that Gary lists his favorite PV restaurants in and I only listed a few of the categories. Please feel free to edit my statement if you wish to discuss it in your podcast.

Okay. So there, Many more categories than I mentioned last week. So now, the record has been corrected Skip. Thanks buddy. We want to be accurate so thanks so much!

Disappointed Listener

Now I also got an email from a dissatisfied listener who was disappointed in me for some language and admittedly, some raunchy content from my episode with Hedda Lettuce. So, I want to apologize to anyone who was offended by the language and the adult sexual content in the interview. Maybe I should have given you all a warning before the interview that this might get a little rough around the edges, and that maybe you should hide the kids before you listen to the podcast, so If I offended any of you, I’m sorry. I figure if I got one complaint, it just might be that I offended others of you and you just didn’t write in to lodge a complaint.

On the other hand, I have to say that his was the only complaint I received from any of you listeners. Actually, I got lots of positive emails and responses from that episode. More than usual. So, there’s that. Just can’t make everyone happy now can I?

Anyway, keep those emails coming. Good or bad, I’m a big boy, I can take it.

Okay let’s get to the interview, shall we???

Eddie’s Hair Salon PV

Have you ever gone to Puerto Vallarta and needed a haircut, but didn’t know where to start to look for a barber or a hairdresser? I know I have. A couple of trips ago I was staying at an Airbnb up Calle Abasolo, and every day, I would walk past this hair salon

Eddie’s Hair Salon PV

called Eddie’s. So when it was time for me to get my mop styled, my first thought was Eddie. So I did a google and Facebook search and found out some of my favorite people

Eddie’s Hair Salon PV

go to Eddie to have their hair coiffed. Both men and women friends, so I felt confident I could use Eddie. I sent him a message asking if he could give me a haircut and he got right back to me Via Facebook Messenger and we set up the appointment.

Now I wasn’t planning on interviewing Eddie. I was strictly going there for a haircut you know? And as I sat there, talking with Eddie, of course I asked him about how he came to live and work in Vallarta. I always give people the third degree. A habit I suppose, but it’s

Eddie Ortiz

always helped me in life as an interviewer, and as a Real Estate Agent. But as I sat and listened to Eddie’s story, it became more and more apparent that I needed to have him on the show. So I told him what I do in paradise, and asked him if he would let me come back

later in the week, and get his story to bring it to you…and what do you know…he said yes. So let’s go right now, to Calle Abasolo 191 in  downtown Puerto Vallarta, and let’s meet the man himself, From San Francisco California to Puerto Vallarta, with love, Eddie Ortiz, Owner and operator of Eddie’s Hair Salon…

Eddie’s Favorite Places to Eat in Vallarta

Breakfast:

Lunch

Dinner:

Hole in the Wall:

What did I tell you? That was such great information, and such a great story wasn’t it? Can you imagine being told you need to hair 10 National born employees to do business in Mexico? I think I’d probably shoot myself.

Inside Eddie’s Hair Salon

Eddie’s prices are very reasonable for a professional hairdresser from San Francisco by the way. Eddie dropped a few names of some of his clients, and you would be impressed if I told you who they were. But that’s a secret between my hairdresser and me.

Inside Eddie’s Hair Salon

And anyway, you will get a very professional and experienced haircut from Eddie. I promise you that.

Also, I need to say I tried the place, that restaurant in the Hotel Encino, the rooftop restaurant…he was right. So romantic. Even though I was alone, eating as I usually do when I come without the wife. Great music and vibe. Mostly locals. You know what??? Don’t go. I don’t want to spoil it. Ahhh….never mind, go ahead!

Eddie Ortiz

Anyway I have all the contact information and pictures and maps and links to places Eddie talked about in the shownotes, so go to www.puertovallartatravelshow.com and find it there.

Okay that should do it for this week.

Next week, stay tuned for more on the ground reports from Puerto Vallarta Mexico, with travel tips, great restaurant and excursion ideas and more.  Until then, remember, this is an interactive show where I depend on your questions and suggestions about all things Puerto Vallarta. If you think of something I should be talking about, please reach out to me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending us your message.

And remember, if you are considering booking any type of tour while you are in Puerto Vallarta, you must go to Vallartainfo.com, JR’s website and reserve your tour through him, right from his website. Remember the value for value proposition. His experience and on the ground knowledge of everything Puerto Vallarta in exchange for your making a purchase of a tour that you would do anyway, you’re just doing it through him as a way of saying thank you. It costs no more than if you were to use someone else so do it. Really. And when you do take one of these tours, email me about your experiences. Maybe you can come on-board and share with others what you liked or didn’t like about the tour. Again, contact me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending off a message. Don’t forget his maps, his DIY tours and his revitalized Happy Hour Board. I have links to all of those in the show notes.

And once again, if you like this podcast, please take the time and subscribe and give me a good review on iTunes if you would. That way we can get the word out to more and more people about the magic of this place. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Remember I made it easy for you to do just that with each episode I create. But if you haven’t been to my website, you really need to have a look there.  I have the links to the places we talk about, interesting pictures and the more all right there in my blog-posts and show-notes for each episode of the show so check them out for sure if you haven’t already all-right? All right.

Okay, thanks so much to Eddie Ortiz from Eddies Hair Salon Puerto Vallarta. Thanks for all that great information Eddie. And thanks for telling us your story. All you had to go through to get to work in paradise. It’s incredible. Thanks for giving us that insight. It’s invaluable. Remember I have pictures and links in the shownotes.  And thanks to all of you for listening all the way through this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. This is Barry Kessler signing off with a wish for you all to slow down, be kind and live the Vallarta lifestyle. Nos Vemos amigos!
