Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler, and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico.

La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta’s Oldest Restaurant on the famous Los Muertos Beach, and The El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club right next door so you can enjoy that fantastic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors, or during the day in its grand splendor for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with our toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so, Puerto Vallarta my friends.

Casa Karma, Puerto Vallarta

This week we are going to the Conchas Chinas neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta, Seaside to a lovely property called Casa Karma. Casa Karma is a private Villa where you can reserve a suite with an ocean view, or hold an event in a magical place. You will meet the owner of Casa Karma Georgia Darehshori, a lovely lady who will tell you all about the Villa. We have emails, Vallarta news and more so let’s see what’s happening this week, the 1st of March, 2022.

Work Continues at Tile Park

Parque de los Azulejos Puerto Vallarta

Volunteers are busy over at Parque de los Azulejos, better known as Tile Park PV. It looks like they have been hard at work almost every day, and I do believe, that if you have attended one of Nat’s Moraga’s workshops over the years, they would like your help. They still need money and I do believe they have a booth at the Saturday market, but if you want to help, I have a link to the Facebook page and their website so send them a message, or if you are in town, look for someone who looks important who’s tiling and ask them how you can get involved.

And speaking of tile park, I had an opportunity to talk with Gabino Sandoval Barrera, the

Gabino Sandoval

pull-tab purse maker. A very nice man and friend. Let’s see what’s happening Hola Gabino!!!

Listen to The Podcast

Thank you Gabino…remember to bring him your soda and beer can pop tops. Just collect them in a baggie and don’t forget like I did, to bring them with you. I have pictures of some of Gabino’s new styles. The different colors are pretty wild. Look for Gabino on the Malecon or at one of the Markets around the bay that he just told us about.

Water Shortage in Puerto Vallarta

A couple of weeks back we had Bob Price from The Vallarta Botanical Garden on the show and he reminded us about something that I want to remind you all about, and that is Vallarta is suffering from a water shortage. Even though rainy season is still 4 months off, The Puerto Vallarta area is in water rationing mode. Part of the reason is the unbridled growth. Condos popping up left and right, right? Water management is another major problem. The city hired an Israeli firm to assess the situation and these people said the city looses 2 months’ worth of water a year in leakage alone. Old, leaky pipes are responsible for the loss of two whole months of fresh water. It’s hard to believe. Water storage is another issue as well as corruption cited by the new mayor of Vallarta Professor Michel. Muchas problemas and the saddest part of it is the poor in the outlying colonias get restrictions and rationing before the more lucky and privileged in the tourist areas is you know what I mean.

So I’m asking you to be conscious of your water usage while in paradise. Think about taking a Navy shower like my dad taught me when I was a kid. My dad was in the army, but he was in charge of a boat during the Korean War…go figure.

What is a Navy style shower?

A Navy shower (also known as a “combat shower”, “military shower”, “sea shower”, “staggered shower”, or “G.I. bath”) is a method of showering that allows for significant conservation of water and energy by turning off the flow of water in the middle portion of the shower while lathering.

And I actually have a video embedded of some dude taking a Navy shower in the shownotes. It’s pretty cute.

So think about shortening up on the shower. It’s pretty easy to do the Navy shower in Vallarta because it’s usually pretty warm and you don’t necessarily need the steady stream of warm water on your back. I understand the tendency to overuse water when visiting a hotel or resort. You figure hey, I’m paying good money for the water and I’m going to use it. So, try to resist the urge.

And speaking of the urge and wine, you may want to keep the adage in mind and take it to heart if you are staying alone or among friends. If you got to pee, you don’t have to flush between every use, right? You know…if it’s yellow it’s mellow and if it’s brown flush it down? Okay…Just another water saving tip. We all need to be  conscious and deliberate about water. It’s a  precious resource.

Jalisco Relaxes Restrictions But Still Holds Vax Pass

Governor Enrique Alfaro Ramirez announced the loosening of his most recent covid restrictions, namely the limit of the number of diners in restaurants, lodgers in hotels, audiences in clubs and theaters, but for now. The Vax Pass is still in effect and that includes the barring of entrance to bars, nightclubs and theaters to non-vaccinated individuals. So for now, the unvaccinated are not allowed unless they have a negative covid test within 48 hours of your visit because….science.

But there is pushback from the businesses that are being affected…From Puerto Vallarta Reporter Online…..

Listen to The Podcast

And we’ll see what happens, of course we will be following this story…and I do have a link to that article from the Vallarta Reporter in the shownotes, however, stories in the Vallarta Reporter online are hidden behind a paywall so if you don’t have a paid subscription, you can’t read it, but you can listen to it. The wonders of podcasts…

Rio Horcones Music Festival

The second LOS HORCONES MUSIC FESTIVAL is scheduled for Sat., March 26, 2022, from 12-6 pm at Los Veranos Canopy Tour. This inspirational community event will build awareness for and educate about the Los Horcones River, one of the most beautiful and important freshwater tributaries to Puerto Vallarta’s Banderas Bay. Event organizers are working hard to prepare an incredible lineup of entertainers for a fun-filled afternoon of great tunes in a lovely natural setting. Those wishing to perform at the event or help as a volunteer or sponsor are encouraged to please contact Horcones Rio by direct message or email info@horcones.org.

I was at the first edition a couple of years ago at Chico’s Paradise, and it was a blast. Of course this year it will be held at Los Veranos Canopy Tour. I have a map in the shownotes and bve ready for a great day riverside with great music. Make sure to bring a few extra pesos with you to donate to help preserve the Rio Horcones, the lifeblood of that whole area including Boca de Tomatlan. I have links in the shownotes. Entry is free by the way…Just in case I forgot to tell you earlier.

Listener Email

Here’s a listener email from Allen…Allen writes…

Hola Barry,
Just wanted to say “gracias” again for all the wonderful work you do.
It is because of you I learned about El Tuito and Bonnie’s place at Rancho Primavera.  I was able to stay there for four nights and really enjoyed my time there (except for the 80 or so noseeum bites I left with…).

Rancho Primavera, El Tuito, Mexico

Also, I was able to enjoy a few days at Hotel Mayto.  What a peaceful place!

Hotel Mayto Paradise Club, South of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

I love the live music in PV, and I’ve enjoyed the musicians you’ve interviewed and shared on your podcast.
Two of my favorite bands in PV are the all female band “Las Mambas”, and another band called “Bobbie and the Others”.  If you haven’t had the chance to see them, I highly recommend checking them out.   Seems like these two bands would be a fun interview.
Thanks again for building this community, and sharing all the insights and keeping us connected to the PV.

I appreciate you,
Allen

Well Allen, thank you for that email. And sorry to hear about the 80 no-see-ums. Dude. How did you survive that? How did you even sleep? Okay, well, let that be a lesson and a warning to you to properly protect and cover your vulnerable body parts while in El Tuito.

I really do love El Tuito and Mayto and the Hotel Mayto. I think about them almost every day believe it or not.

I love the Momba all girl band and I interviewed them a couple of years back but like 2 weeks after I recorded the interview, the lead singer left the band. Then some time later there was another change so I never got a chance to post the episode. They were fun by the way Allen. I heard Bobbi and The Others at El Rio BBQ my last trip down and I really liked her. Country music mostly.

Again, thanks for the email.

Okay, let’s get to our guest shall we?

If you have been following the podcast you know I’ve been interviewing some of the generous people who sponsored the talent show for the benefit of RISE, we talked about the finals at Teatro Vallarta earlier. One of the sponsors I was thrilled to find out was Georgia Darehshori of Casa Karma. I’d been trying to have a conversation with Georgia for about a year now, My friend Polly was working on it as was my other dear friend Marcia Blondin, but you will hear in the interview, Georgia had her hands full at the time, but I was so pleased that Lisa and Billy helped me set up the interview.

Casa Karma, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Casa Karma is an incredible property. Located just south of the Romantic Zone in an area known as Conchas Chinas. It’s a lovely area, with rocky little mini beaches along the coast line. Casa Karma is built into the hillside with a stunning view of the Bahia de Banderas

Buganbillia Suite

overlooking one of these rocky beaches. To get there you head south along caraterra 200 a couple of Kilometers to well, the landmark would be the Lindo Mar Condos. If you have ever eaten at the restaurant at the Lindo Mar, La Playita, the little beach, or stayed at the

Casa Karma Beach

Lindo Mar, then you know what kind of view they have at Casa Karma because it’s right next door. So let’s head up or actually down the Caraterra 200 to #2147 in Colonia Conchas Chinas, and let’s have a conversation with a lovely lady who loves this town with

Casa Karma Sitting Room

all her heart. Kinda like you and me. But maybe in a grander way. Let’s hear from Georgia about a fabulous property with a special energy, a magical place for guests who come to stay a few nights, or those who come for special occasions and events. Suspended above the rocky beach overlooking the grand Bahia de Banderas, let’s meet Georgia Darehshori, the owner of the lovey Casa Karma, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Marcia Bolndin

Blondin attended the three-day event and she wrote about it in her column “From Here” in the PV Mirror, and she describes her experience only the way Marcia can write, which is poetry, and I have a link to that article in the shownotes. It’s on page nine of the Mirror and that’s the February-March 2022 #692 issue of the Mirror. And I have a link to that issue in the shownotes.
