Listen to The Podcast

Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler, and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico.

La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta, México

That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta’s Oldest Restaurant on the famous Los Muertos Beach, and The El Dorado Restaurant and Beach Club right next door so you can enjoy that fantastic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors, or during the day in its grand splendor for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so, Puerto Vallarta my friends.

This week we go to the new Art Museum in Puerto Vallarta, the Arte Vallarta Museo and visit with Nathalie Herling, the lady in charge. I was surprised and pleased to find she has a Greek Restaurant called Eclecticos, and a cool art studio called Art Vallarta, both in Zona Romantica, so we are getting a trifecta of places, all from one guest, We have listener Marty talking tequila in Tequila, news and more so let’s see what’s happening this week in Puerto Vallarta, the 6th day of June, 2022…

Puerto Vallarta Turned 104

May 31st marked the 104th birthday of Puerto Vallarta, her anniversary of being a municipality and 54 years as a city.

Once named Las Peñas de Santa María. Eventually it grew and in 1885 was officially established under the name of La Peña.

On May 31st 1918 the town received the title of municipality and from that day took the name of Puerto Vallarta in honor of Jalisco’s then-governor, Ignacio L. Vallarta, and in 1968, 54 years ago it officially became the city of Puerto Vallarta.

There was a celebration of fireworks and music. So nice to see people out and celebrating again.

So happy belated birthday to Puerto Vallarta 104 don’t look too bad….

The Rain Has Arrived in Vallarta

The rain has arrived, it’s June and usually by the 15th, the first of the downpour has occurred. For now just light rain…hopefully a precursor to a good wet season.

The Vallarta Botanical Garden Makes 3rd Place in the USA Today 10 Best Contest

The votes are in and the counting has stopped and thanks to you and the fans of the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, they placed 3rd in the USA Today 10 Best Contest for Botanical Gardens. They were beat out by the FAIRCHILD TROPICAL BOTANIC GARDEN in Coral Gables, Florida,  and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden – Cincinnati, Ohio.

A panel of experts partnered with 10 Best editors to pick the initial nominees, and the top 10 winners were determined by popular vote.

So way to go Bob Price and the gang at The Vallarta Botanical Garden….it’s so beautiful there…really…and yesterday June 5th is World Environment Day…so get outside and enjoy your environment and coming up at The Botanical Garden is Semana del Colibrí en el Jardín Botánico de Vallarta, Hummingbird Week in the Vallarta Botanical Garden.

Hummingbird Festival at the Vallarta Botanical Garden June 14th-18th

JUNE 14th TO 18th. Enjoy the plethora of colibirs…colibri is hummingbird in Spanish. The Vallarta Botanical Garden attracts a gazillion hummingbirds and the folks there know how to attract them. The sit on your hand…it’s a beautiful thing. Anyway, get over

to the gardens, take a hike, stroll the gardens, eat at their lovely restaurant overlooking the Rio Horcones…remember they are operating their summer hours and are closed Monday’s so don’t take the ride all the way up and find that they are closed…They are open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 in the morning till 6 in the evening. Bring insect repellant and I always wear long pants and shoes…not sandals. I like to avoid the no-see-ums and mosquitos…that’s why.

E-Cigarettes are Illegal in Mexico

I’ve run into a couple of you who have told me stories about having your vaping pens confiscated from you when you get to the airport and it seems there is a concerted effort to ban e cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes… this just in from Axios…

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) on Tuesday signed a decree outlawing the sale of e-cigarettes, the Associated Press reports.

Why it matters: The Mexican government has been pushing an anti-vaping policy, which includes a full ban of imports of e-cigarette devices, per AP.

The announcement was made Tuesday morning during AMLO’s daily press briefing and on World No Tobacco Day, an annual celebration to inform the public about the dangers of using tobacco, per the WHO.

Yes, but: Despite Tuesday’s decree, many Mexicans still import or buy vaping cartridges and fluid online or “under the table,” per AP.

The big picture: Mexico’s president in 2020 signed an executive order that banned the importation of electronic cigarettes.

  • The executive order pointed to data from the World Health Organization, saying that e-cigarette emissions “contain nicotine and other toxic substances that are harmful to both users, and non-users who are exposed to the aerosols second-hand.”

So that kinda answers that question regarding having your e-cig taken from you at the airport… Guess you will have to buy your vape pen here when you get here. I mean… they have vape shops all over the place in Vallarta…Let’s see if they close them up….I doubt it.

I have a link to that Axios Article in the show notes.

Some Sad News…Bill Langford Passes Away

Bill and Suzie Langford

Got some sad news, our buddy Bill Langford from Beach Booty Beach Glass passed away last week. All of a sudden, he was gone. Too soon, too young…My condolences to Suzie his wife and business partner. Bill’s been on the show a couple of times, just recently at the Meet and Greet back last November and I had plans to have him and Suzie on and interview them both, but Suzie wasn’t feeling well last time I was down to interview them so…it never happened. Will see you next time down amiga. Bill was a lovely man.

Restaurant Week Continues in Vallarta

Restaurant Week continues in Vallarta till the 10th, so 5 more days you can visit participating restaurants and enjoy a meal at reduced prices. So check out the list of participating restaurants in town in the show notes,, and eat….eat…

Have you noticed airfare going up? Yikes….Guess it’s still Tijuana to Vallarta for now.

Johnny D Visits Me in California

Johnny D Standing Next to My Car in Simi Valley

Speaking of cheap airfare our friend Johnny D, the hot pickle guy from Canada I had on

the show some time back, and someone who has introduced me to a couple of interviews flew into Los Angeles and stayed with us for 6 days before flying out of Burbank to Las Vegas to get his connecting flight up to Edmonton. By doing that he paid about $400 Us and saved himself about $800. We’ll see if he comes back through LA on his way back.

Wanted Poster Johnny D

Anyway, check your airfare and tell me if you see the same price hikes from your town to paradise. Email me. I’d be interested.

Okay, let’s get to our interviews, shall we?

Marty Goes to Tequila, Jalisco

Over the last few weeks I’ve been teasing an interview I had with listener and frequent contributor Marty, from Indiana. Marty is with the Lyons Club and we’ve spoken over the years about their efforts to bring the Lyon’s eyeglass clinic to Puerto Vallarta, and to other parts of Mexico as well.

Marty and Jeanine Juel

Last trip down I didn’t plan a meet-up because we were going to be celebrating JR’s birthday, which we did, then I hinted I may be announcing a meetup, and then I never did, but JR had his weekly Tuesday evening Meet and Greet at Nacho Daddy, so I went there, with microphone in hand of course because I had heard earlier in the afternoon from Marty that he and his wife Jeannine, were planning on going to JR’s Meet and Greet, if I was planning on coming. And I told him I was. Marty also had a couple of first time Vallarta virgins with him Bob and Lisa from Indiana as well.

So we had a pretty good turnout, but I wanted to hear about Marty’s side trip to Guadalajara and Tequila town on his way to Puerto Vallarta. So, let’s hear how they did it. Let’s go to Basilio Badillo 287 in The Emiliano Zapata Neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta, at JR’s meet and greet and let’s talk with Marty Juel, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Thank you, Marty and Jeannine, great information for those of us who may be contemplating approaching Vallarta from a different angle. It may even be cost effective seeing all these airfares spiking. A side trip to Guadalajara or even Mexico City may be more cost effective and adventuresome.

By the way I have pics Marty sent me as well as the information for the tour guide to Tequila. They are in the show notes.

Next, I have a real treat for you. A visit to the museum in Romance, and a talk with a very interesting woman.

Nathalie Herling

Being Facebook friends with both Javier Nino, and Ada Colorina, in fact I’ve had both Ada and Javier on the podcast over the years, I saw them both post about their art being exhibited at a new Museo, museum, up in the neighborhood of El Remance.

Arte Vallarta Museo in Colonia El Remance, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

I reached out to my friend Marcia Blondin, who I had on last episode, and I asked her who she knew at the Museo, and she said she knew Nathalie Herling, the lady in charge over

Arte Vallarta Museo in Colonia El Remance, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

there. So I asked her if she could make the introduction, and she said yes and did, so I dropped in on Nathalie, and although she had a deadline to meet and something to write, she graciously agreed to sit down with me, and talk about her new project, and other

Arte Vallarta Museo in Colonia El Remance, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

projects that I had no idea she had in her bag of tricks. I was so impressed with Nathalie I have to tell you, and you will be too. Now, to get to Arte Vallarta Museo,  from the romantic zone you walk straight up Lazaro Cardenas to just before the bridge that leads

Arte Vallarta Museo in Colonia El Remance, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

up to El Coloso, where JR lives, and turn right on Rivera del Rio and follow that a way into Remance and the Museo. I have a map to get you there, but that is the location if you are wondering. So now that I have that picture in your mind, let’s go right now, to a lovely courtyard in the newest Museum in Puerto Vallarta, in colonia El Remance, and let’s meet the talented, and very busy Nathalie Herling, of a restaurant…that’s right, a Greek

Arte Vallarta Museo in Colonia El Remance, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

restaurant in the Romantic Zone called Eclecticos, and an art gallery, workshop and supply house called Art Vallarta, also in the Romantic Zone, and now, Arte Vallarta Museo, in colonia El Remance, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Thank you Nathalie. Now wasn’t that exciting? A museum, an art and ceramic gallery and workshop and a Greek restaurant…all in one stop! Wow!  have links and pictures of the museum in El Remance…
