This week we travel to colonia Los Sauces in Puerto Vallarta, centrally located in town and visit with my friend Fernando Vazquez Whitney, a cool guy who owns a place called Pacific Vape Shop, Puerto Vallarta Mexico, and Fernando has a great story, he is Pata Salada. Fernando will tell you how his mother-in-law, his “suegra” en espanol, virtually changed his life by passing on her used vape, after she got a new one for herself. With the new laws against outdoor smoking, still on hold in Jalisco and other states in Mexico, I thought that what Fernando has to say may help a smoker break a habit or give a nonsmoker tools to persuade their family member or friend put out the but, for good.

It’s great info, I just got back from Vallarta and I have some reports for you smokers and non-smokers alike, so before we get to Fernando and Pacific Vape Shop, let’s see what’s happening this week in Puerto Vallarta, March 8th, 2023.

Use Insect Repellant for No-see-ums in Mismaloya and El Tuito

The weather in Vallarta is absolutely beautiful with warm, almost too hot to be in the

El Tuito, Cabo Corrientes, Mexico

direct sun days, with cool, refreshing evenings. You will still need a wrap walking on the Malecon at night, but shorts and t-shirts during the day for sure. Unless you are in Mismaloya, or El Tuito, then insect repellent for the no-see-ums, the local OFF you find in the OXXO or at the omnipresent Farmacias seems to work the best. That, combined with long pants and shoes, for the ultimate protection. Especially at sunrise and sundown.

I had a wonderful stay and the greatest interviews coming your way.

I flew in Delta Airlines LAX to Vallarta. Mask requirement is out of course, no health tracking stuff per se, in fact they didn’t have that covid checklist for you to check/click off at the check-in screen at the ticket kiosk.

FMM Online

As for the FMM, I wasn’t asked to fill one out, and at the Puerto Vallarta Airport, after waiting in a short Monday afternoon line at Immigration had my passport stamped and was given 180 days.

I did as promised, and asked the cab driver, on my way to my to Pitillal to stop at an OXXO for beers, and while I was there, I purchased a box of Marlboro Reds and I ran tests all around town. Here’s what I found over the 9 days and nights. First, there is a smoking spot where it’s always been at the Puerto Vallarta Airport, right at the magic trash can at the passenger drop-off area, where the doors are for departing flights. I didn’t look for a smoking section with an ashtray on the arrival side, but just follow your nose.

I never smoked in bars, restaurants shops or places of business. Never on the beach, and never near open doors. I looked for deserted places. Police saw me and did nothing.

I saw police smoking, Mexicans and foreigners smoking, pretty much everywhere.

I did get a few folks pretty annoyed when their fancy all inclusive resort had no accommodations for smokers. Imagine having to go cold turkey for your relaxing vacation…

Salvador Estrada, the candyman on the Malecon was still selling single cigarettes from his wheelchair in front of the Zoo and Mandala. His customers still light them right up right there next to his chair.

Salvador Estrada, The Candy Man on The Malecon in Puerto Vallarta

So, I do believe, that if you are a smoker, and you don’t act like a jerk who doesn’t care, but like a concerned human being who is looking to make a few concessions by being aware and considerate, while keeping within the current law, under scrutiny, and not being presently enforced. We’ll get back to the new impending law and another way, smokers can make changes when we get to Fernando in a couple of minutes.

By the way, there seemed to be a shortage of the hippie lettuce this time around. Supply line issues I suppose, but what I did notice this trip was that the locally approved grower/seller,  had a bit of a variety of qualities in three different price ranges Just an observation.

A couple of weeks back I was talking about how being able to speak Spanish, opens up a lot of avenues for me, especially chatting up taxistas and finding out about their lives. I’ve had taxi drivers sing to me, offer me rides to check out their ranchos, a place to stay, but mostly stories about their lives. The conversation usually goes like this.. I’ll ask como esta la vida, how’s life, or como esta su dia how’s your day? The taxi driver then says you speak Spanish. …the taxi driver asks do you live here or are you on vacation?

Then I tell them what I’m doing. That I’m on vacation but I do a podcast for fun, as a hobby about Puerto Vallarta. That I record interviews with restaurants, hotels, bars, interesting people, charities, and go home to sell houses in California, then each week or so, I put out one of those interviews with the news of the day, and when I run out of recorded interviews…I come back to Vallarta to record some more…and that usually gets a positive response, and their stories start to flow. It’s a real thing.

Tell Us Your Taxi Story in Puerto Vallarta

This time there were several interesting stories and even opportunities. But after listening to my spiel, he says to me well, you are some sort of a journalist then aren’t you? And I said yes, I suppose you can say I am. He asks me if I remember when the Ameca Bridge collapsed. I said, which time, it’s happened twice. He says about 2010. Now the Ameca Bridge is the bridge that connects the state of Nayarit, with the State of Jalisco, and the bridge is about 650 feet long. And on a day when it was said that a months worth of tropical rain fell in one day, back in September of 2010, at 2:30 in the morning  September 1st, a 180 foot section of the two laned north bound bridge, fell into the Ameca River.

So I said yeah, I remember that, and he says I drove off the bridge and into the river. And I’m like, what? What was  that like? He said he had picked up a couple at the Malecon, and was taking them home to Valle Dorado which is just south of Mezcales, just across the Rio Ameca in Nayarit, when the bridge started to shake, and then his car and two others fell into the raging river. The taxi went right under at first, then bobbed back up to the surface and he somehow got out, and swam, well mostly carried by the current to a tree in the river, where he hung on for dear life for about 45 minutes with the river rushing by, in the black of the night. He was finally rescued and taken to the hospital. His passengers were rescued in a similar fashion. Wow, what a story right? He said I could find his story on YouTube and it’s called the Testimony of Marcos, Taxista Collapsar al Puente Rio Ameca, and I looked it up, and there it was, I translated his testimony and embedded the video in the show notes.

He told me that every September 1st, he posts his video on his social media pages as a reminder, kind of like a birthday, a special day for him. He told me he couldn’t drive over that bridge for 2 years he was so psychologically damaged by it. He wasn’t injured in the fall outside of some bumps and bruises but boy, what a scare.

And once again, it shows how chatting up a taxi driver in Spanish can get you a whole lot more, than a good looking girl in a strip club.

Again, I embedded his video in the shownotes.

Next, we present the testimony of Mr. Marcos Jo Rodríguez. He is the taxi driver who fell into the waters of the Mecca river when the bridge collapsed, he points out that along with his taxi, two other vehicles fell into the river waters. Meca has continued to present to him out loud what he comments for and.

Peter castle. Yes. Marcos Joya Rodríguez by trade tech. What was your date? The 19 number plaques what happened that night? No. Well, I was driving along the Malecón street and suddenly they stopped me. A couple took me bound for Valle Dorado at around 2:15. from the bridge in Ameca, this rocking began.

And in a matter of seconds. Well, we were already heading downhill, two more cars accompanying me until we fell into the water. You came to distinguish two other cars that went towards the river towards. Yes Yes. Well, they were accompanying each other to cross the bridge and suddenly the bridge came up and we fell towards the water and from there.

Well, the strong currents covered us and I no longer knew. What happened after that when you fell into the river in the taxi there? What happened? Well, the taxi sank and suddenly floats. And that’s where I came out. But how did I not know when I saw? I was already outside. And what I did, I jumped to swim 100 meters maximum down I found a tree and from there I held on until support arrived.

How much time has passed since. You had the accident until help arrived plus 40, 45 minutes or so. What was going through your mind at that moment? No, because at that moment I could cross the river, but it was impossible. And well, so much thinking that I would drown. Maybe already when help arrived. That? No, because help arrives and they get involved with odes and means to get me down from the tree and to take me to the shore at the moment you fell.

You no longer noticed. What happened to the couple that came with you? No, since I floated out of the water, I no longer knew about the car or the couple. Not anymore. He never saw more, huh? Then they took you to a hospital that told you what they told you. Yes, it was a checkup, nothing more than a few plates to see how I was doing and everything was fine.

Internal blows, but they weren’t serious after this experience, what do you feel? Being alive, I mean, was an unpleasant moment, but now that you’re alive, that you’re with your family, what do you feel? Well, seeing first give a lot of joy and thank God that I am through in life. And then, want to go ahead.

Because there is no other. Y. And well, I’m happy because I’m here again, unfortunately the car was lost. Was the car yours or did you work for someone else? No, I worked with some people and I was simply the driver of the car, nothing more, but there will be support from your colleagues so that you can get to work in some other unit.

Yes. I think so, because on behalf of the union they are giving me a lot of help and well, I am also happy and it must have been with them because yes, on the part of my boss Álvaro everything is fine. We are moving forward. Good. Hey, any requests for support from the Porto Vallarta City Hall? Well, it seems that today in the afternoon, well, we have a small meeting with the president to see that, to see how he could help me.

What do you Well, just give me a hand. Well, I don’t know what it is in something that can be done, because right now pus, I don’t even know what to ask for what it is. I know that I occupy, that they support me in something. Finally, then you do. You realized that there were other cars traveling alongside you and that this one also fell into the river when the bridge collapsed.

Yes. You don’t remember that the way the guy in front of me looks, he was like a guy. The bridge is very dark. It has no lights. What was visible with the light of my car was the rear. And I saw that it was a logo. Cool red guy. A Silver was kind of cool. And I couldn’t make out the one behind because I could see the pure lights, but it was a car, the one behind was small, but yes, sure.

I am that at three I fell. Well now. Yes, congratulations because you had a difficult time. But are you still here a message for your family? No? Well, everything is fine. And thank God, we’re good again. Thank you so much. Other are you open? Yes Yes. Did you think of your family when the accident happened?

How many children do you have? But yes, in fact they do think about everything. But more than saving. How was your reaction when you met your family? No. Well, but I didn’t know anything. No, no, nothing like that. Well, I say, thank God and that, well, he saw him again because the truth was that he didn’t expect to see him there. What time?

Like that at six in the morning?

Which was? No, well, in fact, everything was fine for me. I was just fine, a little hit by the water and tired, but when you saw your family, what did you feel? Oh well joy. Very happy and happy to be in my house and you are afraid, right? Well, fear not. But well, if something nerves, for example, than means to work and other services.

What side? Oh no. Because then destiny does not mark. I think the same. And perhaps it was a small mistake and on the part of the bridge because guilty, I do not feel or blame anyone because it is something of nature. You can say. And and well, they are unfortunate accidents that can happen. And as it happened to me, it can happen to anyone.

To the FIS.

Like I said, I translated his testimony in the shownotes as well.

Now I have a bunch of great emails from you listeners. Most are real nice and others…you know what? Next week I’ll share with you emails from both sides of the spectrum. You might just get a kick out of the crazy ones….Let’s get to our guest, Fernando Vazquez Whitney from Pacific Vape Shop, Puerto Vallarta.

I first heard of Fernando from my buddies, Debbie and Ray. My Canadian friends who I almost always stay with when I’m in town alone, recording interviews. I was in need of a battery for my special vape pen that I accidently brought in from home…illegally it seems, but undetected, and I needed a battery charger,  which Debbie and Ray assured me that they had at Pacific Vape…And they did.

It’s a fact that it’s illegal to bring electronic cigarettes, vaping devices and solutions into Mexico. It’s also a fact that according to the FAA, you must carry e cigarettes in your carry-on and it can’t be packed in your checked luggage as it’s a lithium cell

gadget. It’s also a fact that selling vaping devices and e-cigarettes in Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta is illegal and prohibited by law, but guess what? They sell them all over the place. So never fear, if you had your e-cigarette or vaping device confiscated by the National Guardsperson at customs. That’s right, I saw the red light green light brigade manned by the National Guard this time down. They really get around, don’t they?  Oh, and Marty, still no face identification machines set up yet in the Vallarta Airport. They say they are coming though. Don’t worry.

But if you left your pens at home, never fear, you can still buy them in Puerto Vallarta, at many, many places. And the main reason you are hearing this topic, is because of the all out smoking, and vaping ban, including outdoor smoking which took effect across

all of Mexico recently. I figured, since vaping makes far less odor than cigarettes do traditionally, even though some of these e-cigarettes produce smoke bomb volumes of smoke, the smell can be almost undetectable, especially in comparison to a real cloud of smoke from a pipe or cigarette.

Now there will be some of you who have no desire to hear about vaping and e-cigarettes, and I get it. Personally, I found it very interesting. But for those of you who want to ditch the entire subject, the last 35 minutes we talk about restaurants and places to visit, and just skip forward if you need to, but as a layman, I found this subject very interesting. Fernando has a rich history that goes way back… so let’s go right now,

to the local’s vape shop, and now yours, where English is spoken fluently for those who are Spanish language challenged. It’s off the beaten path, near Macroplaza, Retorno De Los Albatros 130A, Aralias II, let’s meet Fernando Vazquez Whitney, Pacific Vape Shop, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
